Picture Hanging Height Calculator
Enter the wall height, the frame’s height, and where it hangs — at eye level or above furniture — to find the frame’s top, center, and bottom, and the separate height for the hook or nail.
Picture Hanging Height Calculator calculates in your browser.
The frame’s height and the hook’s height are different numbers
Most picture-hanging advice is about where the artwork should sit: a common guide puts its center around 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor, roughly eye level, and over a sofa or bed the gap above the furniture usually decides instead. This calculator turns either rule into the heights of the frame’s top, center, and bottom.
The nail doesn’t go at the top of the frame. A D-ring or a wire sits some way below the top edge, so the hook goes lower by that drop. Enter it, and the calculator gives the hook height as its own result, so you mark the wall in the right place the first time.
How to use the Picture Hanging Height Calculator
- Choose inches or centimeters and enter the wall height, floor to ceiling.
- Pick eye level or above furniture.
- For eye level, keep or change the center height; above furniture, enter its height and the gap you want.
- Enter the frame’s height (and its width, if you want the drawing in proportion).
- Measure the hanger drop — top of the frame to the D-ring, or to the wire pulled taut toward the top — and enter it to get the hook height.
How the calculation works
Eye level: top = center + frame ÷ 2; bottom = center − frame ÷ 2
Above furniture: bottom = furniture + gap; top = bottom + frame
Hook or nail = top of the frame − hanger drop
A 24 in frame centered at 57 in runs from 45 to 69 in; with a 4 in drop to its wire, the hook goes at 65 in — 4 in below where the top of the frame will be.
| Where it hangs | Frame | Top / center / bottom | Hook or nail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eye level, 57 in center | 24 in tall, 4 in drop | 69 in / 57 in / 45 in | 65 in |
| Over a 34 in sofa, 8 in gap | 30 in tall, 3 in drop | 72 in / 57 in / 42 in | 69 in |
| Eye level, 145 cm center | 60 cm tall, 10 cm drop | 175 cm / 145 cm / 115 cm | 165 cm |

Limitations
- Eye-level and gap figures are common guidance, not rules; adjust them for your ceiling height, furniture, and who will look at the art.
- It calculates heights only. Spacing two hooks across a wide frame, and gallery-wall layouts, aren’t covered.
- The drop must be measured as the frame will hang; a wire stretches and sags with weight.
- Choose wall anchors and hooks rated for the frame’s weight and your wall type.
- Heights up to 100 ft (30.48 m).

Picture Hanging Height Calculator FAQ
- How high should I hang a picture?
- A common guide is to put the center of the artwork about 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor. A 24 in tall frame centered at 57 in has its top at 69 in and its bottom at 45 in.
- How high should art hang above a sofa?
- Over furniture, the gap sets the height — about 6–10 in is common. Above a 34 in sofa back with an 8 in gap, a 30 in frame’s bottom is at 42 in and its top at 72 in.
- Where does the nail go?
- Below the frame’s top by the hanger drop: the distance from the top edge down to the D-ring, or to the wire pulled taut toward the top. A frame whose top is at 69 in with a 4 in drop hangs from a hook at 65 in.
- How do I measure the hanger drop on a wire?
- Pull the wire up toward the top of the frame as tight as it goes, as the hook will hold it, and measure from that point to the top edge. A slack wire gives a lower hook and a frame that tips forward.
- Does it work in centimeters?
- Yes. Centered at 145 cm, a 60 cm frame runs from 115 to 175 cm; with a 10 cm drop, the hook goes at 165 cm.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
