Wall Art Size Calculator

Enter the wall and the sofa, bed, or console below it to see what size art suits it — one piece or a set of two to four — with frame sizes, what physically fits, and how high to hang it.

Wall Art Size Calculator calculates in your browser.

Art is sized to what’s below it, and limited by the wall around it

Art that is too small for the sofa under it looks lost; art that runs past the sofa’s ends looks top-heavy. The usual answer is a share of the furniture’s width — but that is a design habit, and the wall, the ceiling, and the space you want to keep bare set the hard limits.

This calculator keeps the two apart. It gives a width range from the style you choose, cuts it to what physically fits, splits it into two to four pieces with the spacing you set, and works out the artwork size inside a frame and mat. It compares common print sizes and finds the center and top height, and the hook when you give the hanger drop.

How to use the Wall Art Size Calculator

  1. Choose a unit and whether the art hangs above furniture or on an open wall.
  2. Enter the wall’s width, and its height to check the ceiling.
  3. Enter the furniture’s width and height, or the center height on an open wall.
  4. Pick a sizing style, the shape, and how many pieces side by side.
  5. Optionally enter the frame and mat border, a piece you already have, and the hanger drop.

How the calculation works

Arrangement width = reference width × the style’s share (furniture, or the wall)

Each piece = (arrangement − gaps between pieces) ÷ number of pieces

Height = width × the shape’s proportion

Artwork inside = outside − 2 × (frame + mat)

Above furniture: bottom = furniture + gap; on a wall: center at the height you set

Over an 84 in sofa, balanced sizing (60–75%) gives 50.4–63 in; a 4:3 landscape piece in that range is 37.8–47.25 in tall.

Limitations

  • The style shares are optional design guidelines, not rules or safety limits.
  • Sizes are outside sizes; frames vary, so measure the actual frame.
  • Pieces in a set are the same size, side by side in one row; mixed gallery layouts are the Gallery Wall Grid Calculator’s job.
  • Print sizes are common retail sizes, not a list of every product.
  • It doesn’t rate hooks or anchors — use hardware rated for the piece’s weight and suited to your wall.

Wall Art Size Calculator FAQ

What size art should go above an 84 in sofa?
With the balanced style — about 60–75% of the sofa — the art spans about 50.4–63 in wide. In a 4:3 landscape shape that is about 37.8–47.25 in tall. It’s a guideline you can change, not a rule.
Is the two-thirds rule a requirement?
No. Art about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it is a common design rule of thumb. The calculator shows it as an optional range and keeps the physical limits — the wall, the margins, and the ceiling — separate.
Does the size include the frame?
The suggestion is the outside size, frame and mat included, because that is what you see and what has to fit. Enter the frame and mat border to see the artwork size inside: a 3 in combined border takes 6 in off each dimension.
How do I size a set of three prints?
Choose three pieces and the space between them. Each piece is the arrangement width less the gaps, divided by three — on a 60 in wall with the balanced style and 2 in gaps, each portrait piece is about 10.67–13.67 in wide.
How high should the art hang?
Above furniture the bottom sits about 8 in over it by default; on an open wall the center sits at about 57 in. Enter the hanger drop to get the hook height — the same rule as the Picture Hook / Nail Offset Calculator.
Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
