Measuring Hanger Drop for Picture Wire and D-Rings
Knowing where the frame should go is only half the job; the nail goes somewhere else. Every frame hangs from a point some way below its top edge, and that distance — the hanger drop — is what turns the frame’s height on the wall into the hook’s height. This guide shows how to measure it for wire, D-rings, and sawtooth hangers.

What hanger drop is
Hanger drop is the distance from the top edge of the frame down to the point that will rest on the hook. Once you know where the frame’s top should be, the hook goes that far below it: the frame’s top minus the drop.
Measuring a wire
- Lay the frame face down.
- Hook a finger or a tape measure under the wire and pull it up toward the top of the frame, as tight as it will go — the way a nail will hold it.
- Measure from that point to the top edge of the frame.
- That is the drop. A slack wire measured without pulling gives a drop too small, and the frame will hang lower than planned.
Other hangers
| Hanger | Measure the drop to |
|---|---|
| D-rings | The top of the ring’s inside curve, where it rests on the hook |
| Sawtooth | The notch you’ll use, usually the center one |
| Keyhole slot | The top of the slot’s round opening |
Worked examples
A frame whose top should be at 69 in with a 4 in drop hangs from a hook at 65 in. In metric, a frame topping out at 175 cm with a 10 cm drop needs a hook at 165 cm. In both cases the hook is the frame’s top minus the drop — never the top itself.
Two hooks and heavy frames
- With two D-rings, both hooks go at the same height — the frame’s top minus the drop — spaced as far apart as the rings.
- Two hooks keep a frame level better than one on a wire.
- Pick hooks and anchors rated for the frame’s weight and your wall type.
Picture Hanger Drop FAQ
- Where do I put the nail to hang a picture?
- Below the frame’s top by the hanger drop. If the top should be at 69 in and the drop is 4 in, the nail goes at 65 in.
- How do I measure picture wire for hanging?
- Pull the wire up toward the top of the frame as tight as it goes and measure from there to the top edge.
- Why does my picture hang lower than I measured?
- Usually the wire was measured slack, so the real drop is bigger. Measure with the wire pulled taut.
- How do I hang a picture with two D-rings?
- Put both hooks at the frame’s top minus the drop, the same distance apart as the rings.
- Does hanger drop matter for a sawtooth hanger?
- Yes, though it is small. Measure from the top edge to the notch you will use.
