How High to Hang Art Above a Sofa or Bed
Above a sofa, bed, or console, the furniture becomes the reference point. Art hung at eye level over a tall headboard can float awkwardly far above it, or not clear it at all, so the gap between the two usually decides the height instead. This guide covers the gap, worked examples, and how wide the art should be.

The gap above the furniture
A gap of about 6–10 in (15–25 cm) between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame is common, close enough that the two read as one group. Measure from the highest point of the sofa back or headboard, not the seat.
Over a sofa
Over a 34 in sofa back with an 8 in gap, the frame’s bottom sits at 42 in. A 30 in tall frame then reaches 72 in at its top, and its center lands at 57 in — eye level, as it happens. A taller frame would push the center higher, which is normal over furniture.
Over a headboard
Headboards are taller. Over a 50 in headboard with an 8 in gap, a 24 in frame runs from 58 to 82 in, centered at 70 in. On a 96 in wall that still leaves 14 in above the frame; with a lower ceiling a shorter frame or a smaller gap may suit better.
How wide the art should be
Art that is about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it usually looks balanced. Over an 84 in sofa that is about 56 in, as one piece or a group. Much narrower can look lost; wider than the furniture can look top-heavy.
Low ceilings and tall furniture
- Shrink the gap toward 6 in before shrinking the art.
- Choose a landscape frame instead of a portrait one.
- Lean art on a console or shelf instead of hanging it.
