How High to Hang Pictures on a Wall

Pictures are hung too high more often than too low. A common guide puts the center of the artwork at about eye level — roughly 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor — whatever the size of the frame or the height of the ceiling. This guide shows how to turn that center into the frame’s top and bottom, and when another height makes sense.

The eye-level rule

The rule is about the center of the artwork, not its top or the nail. Put the center around 57–60 in from the floor and pieces of different sizes still line up through their middles, which makes a room feel consistent. Many galleries hang to a similar center line.

From center to top and bottom

Add half the frame’s height to the center for the top, and subtract half for the bottom.

24 in45 in57 in69 in
36 in39 in57 in75 in

All centered at 57 in. The hook goes below the top by the hanger drop.

In centimeters

Centered at 145 cm, a 60 cm tall frame runs from 115 to 175 cm. A 40 cm frame at the same center runs from 125 to 165 cm.

When to break the rule

  • Over furniture, the gap above the sofa, bed, or console sets the height instead.
  • In rooms where people mostly sit, such as dining rooms, a slightly lower center can feel right.
  • Very tall ceilings and very large pieces may suit a higher center.
  • Up a staircase, follow the slope rather than one height.

Mark the wall before you drill

  1. Mark the center height lightly in pencil.
  2. Mark the top of the frame above it, half the frame’s height up.
  3. Measure the hanger drop on the back of the frame and mark the hook that far below the top.
  4. Or tape a paper template of the frame to the wall and step back first.

How High to Hang Pictures FAQ

What is the standard height to hang a picture?
A common guide is to center artwork about 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor. It is a convention, not a rule.
Do I measure 57 inches to the center or the top of the frame?
To the center. For a 24 in tall frame, the top is at 69 in and the bottom at 45 in.
Should pictures be hung higher with tall ceilings?
Usually not by much. Keeping the center near eye level relates the art to people, not the ceiling.
How high do I hang a picture in centimeters?
Center it around 145–152 cm. A 60 cm frame centered at 145 cm runs from 115 to 175 cm.
Is the nail at 57 inches?
No. The nail goes below the frame’s top by the hanger drop, which depends on the wire or D-rings.
