Every length unit here is defined exactly in meters. Since 1959, the inch has been exactly 2.54 centimeters, which fixes the foot (12 inches), the yard (3 feet), and the mile (5,280 feet) as exact decimals of a meter. The converter multiplies by the From unit’s size in meters and divides by the To unit’s, keeping full precision and rounding only the displayed result to 10 significant digits.

Limitations
- Feet and inches are converted as separate units — to convert 5 ft 10 in, convert 5 feet and 10 inches and add the results, or enter 5.8333 feet.
- It uses the international foot (0.3048 m), not the US survey foot retired at the end of 2022.
- Negative values are converted as ordinary arithmetic, which suits differences or directions rather than physical lengths.
- Results are shown to up to 10 significant digits; very large or very small results switch to scientific notation.
