How to Center a Gallery Wall Above Furniture

Over a sofa, bed, or sideboard, a gallery wall belongs to the furniture rather than the wall. Its height comes from the gap above the furniture, its width from the furniture’s width, and its center line from the furniture’s center — which is often not the wall’s.

Set the height from the gap

Over furniture, the space between the furniture’s top and the bottom row decides the height. About 6–10 in (15–25 cm) is a common gap: close enough that the art and furniture read together, far enough that heads and lamps don’t bump the frames. The arrangement’s center then follows from its own height and may sit above eye level — that is normal here.

How wide to go

A common guide is an arrangement about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it, and narrower than the furniture itself. Over an 84 in sofa that is about 56 in, which the four 12 × 16 in frames in a row, 57 in wide, match closely.

Center on the furniture

  • Measure the furniture’s center, not the wall’s, and mark that line.
  • If the furniture is off-center on the wall, the arrangement follows the furniture.
  • Over a bed, center on the headboard; over a sideboard with lamps at each end, check the lamp shades clear the lower corners.

Check the ceiling

A tall grid over tall furniture can run close to the ceiling. Add the furniture height, the gap, and the arrangement height; if less than a few inches of wall is left above the top row, drop a row, use smaller frames, or reduce the gap.

Gallery Wall Above Furniture FAQ

How high should a gallery wall be above a sofa?
Leave about 6–10 in between the sofa back and the bottom row. Over a 34 in sofa with an 8 in gap, the bottom row starts at 42 in.
How wide should a gallery wall be over a sofa?
About two-thirds of the sofa’s width is a common guide — around 56 in over an 84 in sofa — and narrower than the sofa itself.
Should a gallery wall be centered on the wall or the sofa?
On the sofa. The art belongs to the furniture beneath it, so it follows the furniture’s center line.
Can a gallery wall sit higher than eye level over furniture?
Yes. Over furniture the gap sets the height, so the center often ends up above 57–60 in — that is expected.
How do I know a gallery wall will clear the ceiling?
Add the furniture height, the gap, and the arrangement height. A 34 in sofa, an 8 in gap, and a 42 in tall grid reach 84 in.
