Gallery Wall Grid Calculator
Enter the grid, one frame’s size, the gaps between frames, and where the arrangement hangs to get its overall size, every frame’s edges and hook height, and whether it fits the wall.
Gallery Wall Grid Calculator calculates in your browser.
One arrangement, measured as a whole and frame by frame
A grid of matching frames looks deliberate only when the gaps are even and the whole group sits at the right height. That means working out the arrangement’s overall width and height from the frames and the gaps, centering that block, and then turning it back into a position for every frame — which is easy to slip on with a tape measure.
This calculator does the arithmetic for a grid of same-size frames. It gives the whole arrangement’s size and edges, a table of every frame’s edges and center or hook height, and — if you enter the wall — how much wall is left on each side.
How to use the Gallery Wall Grid Calculator
- Choose a unit and enter the number of rows and columns.
- Enter one frame’s outside width and height, and the gap you want between frame edges across and down.
- Center the arrangement at eye level, or choose above furniture and enter its height and the gap.
- Add each frame’s hanger drop to get hook heights.
- Optionally enter the wall width (and where along it the center goes) and the wall height to check the fit.
How the calculation works
Width = columns × frame width + (columns − 1) × gap across
Height = rows × frame height + (rows − 1) × gap down
Frame left edge = center − width ÷ 2 + column index × (frame width + gap)
Frame top = center height + height ÷ 2 − row index × (frame height + gap); hook = top − drop
Gaps are measured edge to edge, and only between frames — three columns have two gaps — so six 16 × 20 in frames with 2 in gaps are 52 in wide, not 54.
| Grid and placement | Frames and gaps | Arrangement width × height | Top / bottom edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 rows × 3 columns, centered at 57 in | 16 × 20 in, 2 in gaps | 52 in × 42 in | 78 in / 36 in |
| 1 row × 4, 8 in above a 34 in sofa | 12 × 16 in, 3 in gaps | 57 in × 16 in | 58 in / 42 in |
| 3 rows × 3 columns, centered at 145 cm | 30 × 40 cm, 5 cm gaps | 100 cm × 130 cm | 210 cm / 80 cm |

Limitations
- Every frame in the grid is the same size. Mixed sizes, salon-style clusters, and staggered rows aren’t calculated.
- Hook heights assume one hook on each frame’s center line. For two D-rings, use the Picture Hook / Nail Offset Calculator with that frame’s top height.
- Gap and height figures are common guidance, not rules.
- Grids up to 6 rows by 6 columns; sizes up to 100 ft (30.48 m).

Guides
- Planning a Gallery WallPlan a gallery wall grid on paper first: work out its overall size from the frames and gaps, choose its height, and turn it into a mark for every frame.
- Gallery Wall Frame SpacingCommon gaps between gallery wall frames, how the gap changes the overall width, and why spacing is measured edge to edge rather than center to center.

Gallery Wall Grid Calculator FAQ
- How far apart should gallery wall frames be?
- About 2–3 in (5–8 cm) between frame edges is common. Six 16 × 20 in frames in two rows of three with 2 in gaps make an arrangement 52 in wide and 42 in high.
- How high should a gallery wall hang?
- Treat the whole arrangement as one picture and center it around 57–60 in from the floor. Centered at 57 in, that 42 in tall grid runs from 36 in to 78 in.
- How do I hang a gallery wall above a sofa?
- Let the gap above the sofa set the bottom row. Over a 34 in sofa with an 8 in gap, the 42 in grid’s bottom edge is at 42 in, its center at 63 in, and its top at 84 in.
- Are the positions to frame edges or centers?
- Edges: each frame’s outside left, right, top, and bottom. Heights are from the floor. Across the wall they are from the wall’s left end when you enter its width, otherwise either side of the arrangement’s center line.
- Can the frames be different sizes?
- Not in this calculator — every frame in the grid is the same size. For mixed sizes, keep the same gap between edges and line up one shared edge or center line.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
