Mirror Size Above Furniture Calculator calculates in your browser.

A mirror is sized by the furniture, and stopped by the ceiling

A mirror over a dresser or mantel usually looks right at about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture’s width. But a tall portrait mirror needs height, and above a high mantel or a tall dresser there may not be much wall left once you allow a gap and some space below the ceiling.

This calculator works out both. It gives the width range as an optional guideline, the height for the shape and orientation you pick, and the physical limit from the wall, and cuts the suggestion when the guideline doesn’t fit. It compares alternatives — a round or landscape mirror often fits where a tall one doesn’t — and finds the hanging height.

How to use the Mirror Size Above Furniture Calculator

  1. Choose a unit and what the mirror hangs above.
  2. Enter the furniture’s width and height, and the wall height (and width, if it’s narrow).
  3. Pick the mirror shape and, for rectangles and ovals, the orientation.
  4. Keep or change the gap above the furniture and the wall to keep clear below the ceiling.
  5. Optionally enter side margins, the frame width, and the hanger drop.

How the calculation works

Guideline width = furniture × ⅔ to ¾ (never wider than the furniture)

Height room = wall − furniture − gap − ceiling clearance

Height = width × the shape’s proportion (round: the same as the width)

Glass = outside − 2 × frame

Bottom = furniture + gap; center = bottom + height ÷ 2

Over a 60 in dresser the guideline is 40–45 in wide. With a 96 in wall, a 34 in dresser, a 6 in gap, and 6 in clear below the ceiling, there are 50 in of height.

Limitations

  • The width share and shape proportions are optional design guidelines, not rules.
  • The mirror is centered over the furniture; off-center and leaning mirrors aren’t modelled.
  • Sizes are outside sizes, frame included; the glass is smaller by the frame on both sides.
  • Over a working fireplace, check the mirror and finish are suitable for the heat with the makers.
  • It doesn’t size anchors or rate loads — follow the mirror maker’s mounting instructions.

Mirror Size Above Furniture Calculator FAQ

How wide should a mirror be above a dresser?
About two-thirds to three-quarters of the dresser’s width is common guidance, and no wider than the dresser. Over a 60 in dresser that is about 40–45 in. It’s an optional guideline, not a rule.
What if there isn’t much wall above the furniture?
The calculator works out the height between the furniture plus the gap above it and the ceiling clearance, and cuts the suggestion to fit. With a 96 in wall, a 34 in dresser, a 6 in gap, and 6 in kept clear, a portrait mirror can be up to 50 in tall.
Should a mirror over a mantel be round or rectangular?
Either can work. A round mirror needs as much height as width, so on a short wall above a high mantel a round or landscape mirror often fits where a tall portrait one doesn’t — the alternatives table shows which fit.
How high should I hang a mirror above furniture?
The default puts the bottom 6 in above the furniture — about 4–10 in is common, or 0 for a mirror resting on a mantel. Enter the hanger drop to get the hook height.
Will my wall hold the mirror?
The calculator doesn’t size anchors or rate loads. Follow the mirror maker’s mounting instructions and use fixings rated for its weight and suited to your wall.
Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
