Rug Size Calculator
Enter your room and choose a layout — sofa legs on the rug, a dining set, a bed, or an even border — to see which common rug sizes cover the furniture and still fit the room.
Rug Size Calculator calculates in your browser.
Size the rug from the furniture, then check it against the room
A rug that is too small is the most common mistake: it floats in the middle of the floor and makes the furniture look disconnected. The usual fixes are layout rules — reach under the sofa’s front legs, keep dining chairs on the rug when they are pulled out, run past the sides of a bed — and this calculator turns the rule you pick into a target size from your own furniture.
It then compares that target with common retail sizes, long side to long side, and keeps only the sizes that still leave the floor you want at the walls. You get the smallest standard size that does the job, the target itself in case a custom size suits you better, and a plan of the room with the rug drawn to scale.
How to use the Rug Size Calculator
- Choose feet, inches, centimeters, or meters — metric units compare metric rug sizes.
- Enter the room’s length and width, wall to wall.
- Pick the room and layout, then enter the furniture it is built around: the seating area, the table, or the bed.
- Adjust the margins — how far the rug runs past the furniture or under the sofa — if you prefer more or less.
- Set the least floor you want to see at the walls, then read the suggestion and the table of sizes.
How the calculation works
Front legs on: (seating width + 2 × margin) × (seating depth − sofa depth + tuck)
All legs on: seating area + 2 × margin; dining: table + 2 × pull-back; bed: (bed width + 2 × side) × (bed length − start + past the foot)
Even border: room − 2 × border; every size must also fit room − 2 × least floor
A 9 × 8 ft seating area with the rug 6 in under the sofa and 6 in past each side needs about 10 × 5.5 ft, so 8 × 10 ft is the smallest common size that covers it; 9 × 12 ft also fits the room if you prefer more rug.
| Room | Layout | Suggested size | Layout target |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 × 12 ft | Front legs on: seating 9 × 8 ft, 3 ft sofa | 8 × 10 ft | 5.5 ft × 10 ft |
| 14 × 12 ft | Dining: 6 × 3.5 ft table | 8 × 10 ft | 7.5 ft × 10 ft |
| 11 × 10 ft | Bedroom: twin bed | 6 × 9 ft | 5.75 ft × 6.167 ft |
| 5 × 4 m | Even border of 0.45 m | 300 × 400 cm | 3.1 m × 4.1 m |

Limitations
- The layout rules are common design guidance, not a single correct answer — tape the size out on the floor before you buy.
- Standard sizes are typical retail sizes; makers vary by an inch or two, and some sell sizes not listed.
- Rooms are treated as rectangles: doors, vents, fireplaces, and built-ins aren’t modeled, so leave room for them in the least-floor setting.
- Bed presets are mattress sizes; a frame or headboard adds a few inches, so use a custom size for the frame’s footprint.
- Round, oval, and runner rugs aren’t compared.

Rug Size Calculator FAQ
- What size rug do I need for a living room?
- It depends on the furniture more than the room. For a seating area 9 ft wide and 8 ft deep with a 3 ft deep sofa, a rug that reaches 6 in under the sofa’s front legs and 6 in past each side needs to be about 10 × 5.5 ft, so the smallest common size that covers it is 8 × 10 ft.
- What size rug goes under a dining table?
- One that keeps the chairs on the rug when they are pulled out — commonly at least 24 in past every edge of the table. A 6 × 3.5 ft table plus 2 ft each side needs 10 × 7.5 ft, so an 8 × 10 ft rug works.
- What size rug goes under a queen bed?
- With a 60 × 80 in queen mattress, a rug 18 in past each side and the foot, starting 2 ft below the headboard, needs to be 8 ft across and about 6.2 ft along the bed. An 8 × 10 ft rug turned sideways covers it. A frame adds a few inches, so use its footprint if you know it.
- How much floor should show around a rug?
- There is no single rule. A border of about 12–18 in is common in larger rooms. In a 12 × 14 ft room, an 18 in border leaves room for a 9 × 11 ft rug, so the largest common size inside it is 8 × 10 ft.
- Are standard rug sizes the same everywhere?
- No. Feet sizes such as 5 × 8, 8 × 10, and 9 × 12 ft are common in the US; metric sizes such as 160 × 230 and 200 × 300 cm are common elsewhere, and makers vary by an inch or two. Choose centimeters or meters to compare metric sizes.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
