Washer/Dryer Closet Clearance Calculator
Enter the closet’s inside size, both appliances, and the clearances from their manuals to see whether they fit side by side or stacked — and, separately, whether there is enough working space in front.

Check the closet and the space in front as two separate answers
A laundry closet has to hold more than the appliances: most manuals ask for a little room at the sides and above, and several inches behind for the water hoses and the dryer vent. This calculator adds the clearances you enter to the washer and dryer sizes — side by side or stacked — and compares the total with the closet’s inside width, depth, and height.
The floor in front of the closet is a different question. You need room there to open the doors, load, and stand, but that space is outside the closet, so it is never added to the closet depth. The calculator checks it on its own, along with an optional gap to a closed door and whether each appliance gets through the closet doorway.
How to use the Washer/Dryer Closet Clearance Calculator
- Choose the unit, and whether the pair goes side by side or stacked.
- Measure the closet inside, wall to wall, at its narrowest points — depth to the closed door or the front edge of the opening.
- Enter each appliance’s width, depth (including the door and knobs), and height from its spec sheet.
- Replace the starting clearances with the ones in your installation manuals; add a stacking-kit height if you stack.
- Optionally enter the floor space in front of the closet, a gap your manual asks for to a closed door, and the closet doorway’s size.
How the calculation works
Side by side: width = side + washer + between + dryer + side; height = taller unit + top
Stacked: width = wider unit + 2 × side; height = washer + kit + dryer + top
Depth inside = deeper unit + rear clearance (the working zone outside is never added)
A standard 27 in pair side by side needs 57 in of width with 1 in clearances, so a 60 in closet leaves 3 in. Stacked in a 34 in deep closet, the same units fail on depth alone: 30 in plus 5 in behind is 35 in.
| Closet (W × D × H) | Appliances | Floor in front | Width inside | Depth inside | Working zone outside |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 × 36 × 84 in | 27 × 30 × 39 in pair, side by side | 48 in | 3 in to spare | 1 in to spare | 48 in of 36 in wanted — enough |
| 30 × 34 × 80 in | 27 × 30 × 39 in pair, stacked on a 1 in kit | — | 1 in to spare | 1 in too big | Not checked (enter the floor space in front) |
| 160 × 90 × 210 cm | 60 × 65 × 85 cm pair, side by side | 80 cm | 32.5 cm to spare | 12.5 cm to spare | 80 cm of 90 cm wanted — 10 cm short |

Limitations
- It checks dimensions only. It doesn’t check dryer exhaust routing or length, closet-door ventilation openings, utility access, gas requirements, or building codes — your manuals and local rules decide those.
- The starting clearances are typical figures from manufacturer guides, not your models’ requirements. Replace them with your manuals’ values.
- Appliances are treated as boxes: hoses, cords, and vent elbows must fit inside the rear clearance you enter.
- The closet doorway check compares each appliance’s narrower side and height with the opening; it doesn’t model tilting or the path to the closet.
- Sizes up to 100 ft (30.48 m).

Washer/Dryer Closet Clearance Calculator FAQ
- How much closet space does a side-by-side washer and dryer need?
- Add the clearances to the appliances. Two 27 in wide units with 1 in at each side and 1 in between need 57 in of width. At 30 in deep with 5 in behind for hoses and the vent, they need 35 in of depth, and at 39 in tall with 1 in above, 40 in of height. Use the clearances in your own manuals — these are only typical starting values.
- How much space does a stacked washer and dryer need?
- Width is the wider unit plus a clearance each side, and height is both units plus the stacking kit plus the top clearance. Two 27 in wide, 39 in tall units on a 1 in kit, with 1 in at the sides and above, need 29 in of width and 80 in of height. Only stack a pair the manufacturer approves for stacking, with its kit.
- Does the space in front of the closet count toward its depth?
- No. The closet depth has to hold the deepest unit plus the rear clearance. The floor in front of the closet — for opening the doors, loading, and standing — is a separate check, so a short working zone is reported on its own and never makes an appliance fit a closet that is too shallow.
- If the measurements fit, is the installation safe?
- Not necessarily. A dimensional fit doesn’t cover dryer exhaust routing, closet-door ventilation openings that many manuals require, access to water, drain, power, or gas, or local building requirements. Follow the installation instructions for your exact models.
- What clearances should I enter?
- The ones in your washer’s and dryer’s installation instructions. Many manuals ask for about 1 in at the sides and top and several inches behind for hoses and the vent, and some ask for a gap to a closed closet door. The calculator starts with typical values and labels them so you can replace them.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
