TV Mount Height Calculator
Enter the TV’s screen size, your seated eye height, and how far away you sit to estimate a comfortable screen height, the angles you look at it from, and — separately — where the bracket’s mounting point goes.
TV Mount Height Calculator calculates in your browser.
Where the screen should sit, and where the bracket goes, are two separate answers
Wall-mounted TVs often end up too high — over a fireplace, or at the height a picture would hang — and the result is a tilted head for every film. A useful starting point is to put the screen’s center near the eye height of someone seated, then decide how far above that you are comfortable looking.
This calculator turns the screen’s diagonal into its real width and height, places it from your eye height, distance, and chosen angle, and shows the angles from your seat to its top, center, and bottom. The bracket height is a separate result, because a TV’s mounting holes are rarely at the screen’s center.
How to use the TV Mount Height Calculator
- Choose a unit and enter the TV’s screen size (the diagonal) and its shape — most are 16:9.
- Sit where you watch and measure from the floor to your eyes.
- Measure the distance from your eyes to the wall where the screen will be.
- Keep the angle at 0° for a center at eye level, or try a few degrees up.
- If you know it, enter how far the bracket’s mounting point is from the screen’s center, and any furniture or mantel below.
How the calculation works
Screen height = diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²); width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²) for an a:b screen
Screen center = eye height + distance × tan(angle above eye level)
Top / bottom = center ± screen height ÷ 2
Angle to a point = atan((point − eye height) ÷ distance); bracket = center ± its offset
A 65 in 16:9 screen is about 31.9 in tall, so centering it at a seated eye height of 42 in puts its top near 57.9 in — about 8.4° up from 9 ft away — and its bottom near 26.1 in.
| Screen and seat | Distance and angle | Center / top / bottom | Angles to top / center / bottom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65 in 16:9, eyes at 42 in | 108 in, 0° (eye level) | 42 in / 57.93 in / 26.07 in | 8.4° up / 0° / 8.4° down |
| 55 in 16:9, eyes at 40 in | 96 in, 5° up | 48.4 in / 61.88 in / 34.92 in | 12.8° up / 5° up / 3° down |
| 139.7 cm (55 in) 16:9, eyes at 105 cm | 250 cm, 0° (eye level) | 105 cm / 139.2 cm / 70.8 cm | 7.8° up / 0° / 7.8° down |

Limitations
- Heights and angles are viewing guidance, not a correct height for everyone; posture, seating, and room layout differ.
- It doesn’t check the wall, studs, bracket, or TV weight. Follow the TV and bracket makers’ instructions and use hardware rated for the TV.
- The diagonal is the visible screen; the bezel and stand are not included.
- It assumes one main seat. For several seats, use the most common one or check each.
- Angles 0–30° above eye level; sizes up to 100 ft (30.48 m).

TV Mount Height Calculator FAQ
- How high should I mount a TV?
- A common starting point is the screen’s center near seated eye height — about 40–42 in from the floor on a typical sofa. A 65 in 16:9 TV centered at 42 in runs from about 26.1 in to 57.9 in.
- What viewing angle is comfortable?
- Looking straight ahead or slightly up suits most people; many find more than about 15° up to the screen’s center tiring for long viewing. From 108 in away, each 5° up raises the center by about 9.4 in.
- How high should a TV go above a TV stand or fireplace?
- High enough that the screen’s bottom clears the furniture plus a gap. Over a 30 in console with a 4 in gap, a 65 in TV’s center must be at least about 49.9 in from the floor.
- Is the bracket at the same height as the screen’s center?
- Often not. The bracket fixes to the TV’s VESA holes, which can sit above or below the screen’s center. Enter that offset from the manual and the calculator gives the bracket height as its own result.
- How tall is a TV screen from its size?
- From the diagonal and the aspect ratio: a 16:9 screen is diagonal × 9 ÷ √337 high and diagonal × 16 ÷ √337 wide, so a 65 in TV’s picture is about 56.7 × 31.9 in.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
