Sectional Sofa Room Fit Calculator
Enter the room, the sectional’s sides and depths, which side its chaise is on, and the walkway you want, to see whether it fits in each corner and how much floor it leaves open.
Sectional Sofa Room Fit Calculator calculates in your browser.
Plan an L-shaped sectional in your room
A sectional’s overall size — say 112 × 66 in — describes the box around it, not the floor it covers. The open corner inside the L is usable space, and which side the chaise is on decides which corners it can sit in. This calculator places the sectional in each corner of a rectangular room with its backs to the walls, checks that it fits and clears any spaces you keep free, and measures the open floor in front of both sections against the walkway you want.
It answers two questions separately: does it physically fit, and does it leave room to walk. A sectional can pass the first and fail the second. It is about the assembled sofa in the room — getting its pieces through the door is a different check, done with the doorway, hallway, and stairwell calculators.
How to use the Sectional Sofa Room Fit Calculator
- Choose your unit. Switching it later converts what you have typed.
- Enter the room’s length (the wall along the bottom of the plan) and width.
- Say which side the chaise or return is on as you face the sofa, and enter the overall length of each side, the depth of the long side, and the chaise or return width.
- Enter the walkway you want to keep open in front of the sofa.
- Add up to two spaces to keep clear — a door swing, a hearth, a radiator — measured from the bottom-left corner.
How the check works
Footprint = long side × its depth + chaise width × (return length − long-side depth)
Open in front of a section = room size across − section depth, or the distance to a reserved space in that strip
Walkway kept when both openings ≥ the walkway you enter
In the 118 × 72 in room the sectional fits against the long wall, but leaves only 34 in in front of it — physically fine, 2 in short of the walkway. In the 100 × 96 in room it doesn’t fit any corner at all, so the walkway never comes into it.
| Room | Sectional | Walkway | Result | Walkway kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 144 × 132 in | 112 × 66 in, 38 in deep, 34 in chaise | 36 in | Likely fits | Yes |
| 118 × 72 in | 112 × 66 in, 38 in deep, 34 in chaise | 36 in | Does not fit under the conditions checked | No — 2 in short |
| 100 × 96 in | 112 × 66 in, 38 in deep, 34 in chaise | 36 in | Does not fit under the conditions checked | Not checked (the footprint doesn’t fit) |
Calculated on your device
- The check runs in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.
- Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored.
- The calculator area, including the floor plan, is masked from session-recording analytics, so what you enter isn’t captured in recordings.
Limitations
- The room is a rectangle and the sectional sits in a corner with both backs to the walls. Floating layouts, U-shapes, curved sections, and angled walls aren’t modelled.
- The walkway is measured straight out from the front of each section to the opposite wall or a reserved space; coffee tables and rugs aren’t placed.
- Left- and right-facing follow the most common convention (as you face the sofa); check your retailer’s drawing.
- Room fit isn’t delivery fit: the pieces still have to get through every door, hallway, and stair.
- Sizes up to 100 ft (30.48 m) in inches, feet, centimeters, or meters.

Sectional Sofa Room Fit Calculator FAQ
- Will a sectional fit in my living room?
- Measure the room and the sectional’s two sides, depths, and chaise width. A 112 × 66 in sectional, 38 in deep with a 34 in chaise, fits a 144 × 132 in room with its long side on the 132 in wall, leaving 106 in in front of the long side and 98 in in front of the chaise.
- Why is the sectional’s footprint smaller than its overall size?
- Because an L isn’t a rectangle. That 112 × 66 in sectional sits in a 51.3 ft² box, but the sofa itself covers 36.2 ft² — the open corner inside the L is usable floor for a coffee table or a path.
- What is the difference between left-facing and right-facing?
- Most retailers name the side as you stand facing the sofa: left-facing has the chaise or return on your left. It decides which corners of a room the sofa can sit in with both backs to the walls. Retailers don’t all use the same convention, so check the product drawing.
- It fits — so why does it say the walkway isn’t kept?
- Fitting the room and leaving room to walk are separate answers. The same sectional in a 118 × 72 in room physically fits, but leaves only 34 in in front of the long side, 2 in short of a 36 in walkway.
- If it fits the room, will it fit through the door?
- Not necessarily — that is a separate check. Sectionals usually arrive in pieces, and each piece has to get through every door, hallway, and stair on the way. Use the doorway, hallway, and stairwell calculators for the largest piece.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
