How High to Mount a TV Above a Stand or Fireplace

With a console, sideboard, or mantel under the screen, the TV can’t simply go at eye level — its bottom edge has to clear what is below. The lowest height that does that is easy to calculate, and it tells you straight away whether the result will be comfortable to watch.

The lowest center that clears

Add the furniture’s height, the gap you want above it, and half the screen’s height. That is the lowest the screen’s center can go. Over a 30 in console with a 4 in gap, a 65 in TV, about 31.9 in tall, can be centered no lower than about 49.9 in from the floor.

Over a fireplace

  • A mantel often pushes the center well above seated eyes; check the angle to the center from your seat.
  • Heat and soot rise: follow the TV maker’s guidance on clearance above a working fireplace, and check the mantel shields it.
  • A pull-down or tilting mount can bring the screen nearer eye level when watching.
  • Check for flues, cables, and masonry before drilling.

Choosing the gap

A few inches between the furniture and the screen keeps a soundbar, decorations, or a set-top box from blocking the picture, and gives the eye a clear break. Measure anything you will put on the furniture and use that as the gap.

Then find the bracket height

Once the screen’s height is settled, the wall plate goes wherever the TV’s mounting holes need it — often an inch or more above or below the screen’s center. Take that offset from the TV and bracket manuals and fix the plate into studs or anchors suited to the wall.

TV Above a Stand or Fireplace FAQ

How high should a TV be above a TV stand?
High enough that its bottom clears the stand plus a few inches. Over a 30 in stand with a 4 in gap, a 65 in TV’s center must be at least about 49.9 in.
How high should a TV be above a fireplace?
At least high enough to clear the mantel and the maker’s heat clearance. Over a 54 in mantel with a 6 in gap, a 55 in TV is centered at 73.5 in or more — about 16° up from 9 ft.
Is a TV above a fireplace too high?
Often it means looking up more than about 15°, which many find tiring for long viewing. A pull-down mount can help.
How much space should be between a TV and a soundbar?
Enough that the soundbar doesn’t block the bottom of the picture; measure the soundbar’s height and leave at least that as the gap.
Do I measure from the floor or the furniture?
From the floor for every height, so the furniture height, gap, and screen all add up to positions you can mark on the wall.
