TV Eye Level and Viewing Angle Explained
How comfortable a TV is to watch depends less on its height in inches than on the angle you look at it from. The same screen 4 ft up feels fine across a big room and tiring from a close sofa. This guide explains how the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are worked out and what they mean.

The vertical angle
Draw a line from your eyes to a point on the screen. Its angle above level is the arctangent of the height difference divided by the distance. A screen center 15 in above your eyes is about 8° up from 9 ft away, but about 13° up from 5½ ft.
Angles at 108 in (9 ft)
| Center above your eyes | Angle up to the center |
|---|---|
| 0 in | 0° |
| 9.45 in | 5° |
| 19.04 in | 10° |
| 28.94 in | 15° |
Height above eyes = distance × tan(angle).
What is comfortable
Most people are comfortable looking straight ahead or slightly down, as at a desk, and many find looking up more than about 15° to the middle of a screen tiring over a film. These are guidance figures, not limits — but they explain why a TV over a tall fireplace often feels wrong from a sofa close to it.
The horizontal view
The screen’s width across your view is twice the arctangent of half its width over the distance. A 65 in TV, about 56.7 in wide, fills about 29° of view from 9 ft. Home-cinema guidance often quotes around 30° as a comfortable minimum for films and around 40° for a more immersive picture, which mostly guides screen size and seating distance rather than height.
Top, center, and bottom
- Check the angle to the top of the screen as well as the center; subtitles and scores sit near the bottom and top edges.
- At eye level, a 65 in screen from 9 ft spans about 8.4° up to 8.4° down.
- Tilting the screen down toward you helps reflections and contrast when it has to sit higher.
TV Viewing Angles FAQ
- How do I work out the viewing angle to my TV?
- Take the height of the point above your eyes, divide by the distance to the screen, and take the arctangent. 15.93 in above your eyes at 108 in is about 8.4° up.
- What vertical viewing angle is comfortable for a TV?
- Straight ahead or slightly up suits most people; many find more than about 15° up to the screen’s center tiring for long viewing.
- Does sitting farther away make a high TV more comfortable?
- Yes — the same height above your eyes makes a smaller angle the farther back you sit.
- What does horizontal viewing angle mean for a TV?
- How much of your view the screen’s width fills. A 65 in TV fills about 29° from 9 ft.
- Should a TV be tilted down?
- If it has to sit well above eye level, tilting it toward the seat can reduce glare and keep the picture even, but follow the bracket’s limits.
