How High to Mount a TV on the Wall

There is no single right height for a TV, but there is a sensible place to start: the middle of the screen near the eyes of someone sitting where they usually watch. From there you can raise it a little for a standing kitchen view or a deep recliner, knowing what that does to the angle you look up at.

Start from seated eye height

On a typical sofa, seated eyes are about 40–42 in (100–107 cm) from the floor; deep sofas and recliners can be lower, bar stools much higher. Sit where you will watch and measure to your eyes rather than assuming — it is the single number the rest depends on.

The size a TV is sold as is the screen’s diagonal; its height is diagonal × 9 ÷ √337 for 16:9.

Going higher

Mounting above eye level is common when there is furniture or a fireplace below, or the room is watched standing. Each step up means looking up: from 9 ft (108 in) away, raising the center by about 9.4 in tilts your view up about 5°. A tilting bracket can angle the screen down to meet you.

Measure before you mark

  1. Measure seated eye height and the distance from your eyes to the wall.
  2. Work out the screen’s height from its diagonal.
  3. Choose the center height, then mark the screen’s top and bottom on the wall with tape.
  4. Sit down and look; adjust before drilling.
  5. Only then find the bracket position from the TV’s manual.

Viewing height is not mounting height

Where the screen should sit is one answer; where the wall plate goes is another. The bracket attaches to the TV’s VESA holes, which are often above or below the screen’s center, and the wall plate must also land on studs or suitable anchors. Follow the TV and bracket instructions for that part.

How High to Mount a TV FAQ

What is the best height to mount a TV?
A common starting point is the screen’s center at seated eye height — about 40–42 in from the floor on a typical sofa — adjusted for your seating and room.
How high should a 65 inch TV be mounted?
Centered at 42 in, a 65 in 16:9 screen runs from about 26.1 in to 57.9 in off the floor, because the screen is about 31.9 in tall.
How high should a 55 inch TV be from the floor?
Centered at 42 in, a 55 in 16:9 screen’s bottom is about 28.5 in from the floor and its top about 55.5 in.
Is it bad to mount a TV too high?
It can be uncomfortable for long viewing, because you look up. Many people find more than about 15° up to the screen’s center tiring.
Should the TV be at eye level when standing or sitting?
Usually sitting, since that is how most viewing happens. A kitchen or bar area watched standing may suit a higher center.
