PNG to WebP processes files locally in your browser.
What PNG to WebP conversion does
Convert a PNG into WebP for modern web delivery. Processing stays in your browser, and you can tune WebP quality when canvas encoding is available.
This is not a lossless conversion. A smaller file is not guaranteed for every PNG.
How to convert PNG to WebP
- Choose a .png file.
- Adjust WebP quality if needed.
- Select Convert & download.
- Save the .webp file from your downloads.
When WebP can be useful
WebP is often used for page assets where current browsers are expected and you want efficient delivery without always switching to JPG.
Transparency behavior
This tool does not flatten onto white. When the browser WebP encoder supports alpha, transparent PNG pixels can remain transparent. Quality changes affect lossy color encoding; they are not described as removing transparency.
WebP quality settings
The slider defaults to 90%. Lower values usually shrink the file and can introduce compression artifacts.
File-size expectations
WebP is often smaller for photographs, but complex graphics or high quality settings can reverse that. Compare the download instead of assuming savings.
Browser support
Encoding requires canvas WebP support. Unsupported browsers see a clear error, get no mislabeled download, and do not increment usage.

PNG to WebP FAQ
- Does WebP preserve PNG transparency?
- When the browser’s WebP encoder supports alpha, transparent PNG pixels stay transparent. This tool does not flatten onto white. It does not claim lossless or pixel-perfect output.
- Will WebP always be smaller?
- Often for web delivery, but not always. Results depend on the image and WebP quality. This tool does not promise a smaller file.
- Does conversion reduce quality?
- Canvas WebP encoding with a quality slider is lossy. Lower quality usually shrinks the file and can introduce artifacts.
- Can I adjust WebP quality?
- Yes. Use the WebP quality slider (50%–100%, default 90%).
- Are images uploaded?
- No. PNG to WebP runs locally in your browser and does not upload your image to Looty Tools servers.
- Why does WebP encoding fail in some browsers?
- The tool checks canvas WebP encoding support. Unsupported browsers get a clear compatibility error, no mislabeled download, and no usage count.
