Why conversion does not restore lost JPEG detail

JPEG compression discards information. PNG can only store the pixels your browser decoded. Artifacts from the original JPEG remain visible in the PNG.

Photographic PNGs are often larger than the source JPG. Simple graphics may compress differently.

Limits

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Converting a JPEG to PNG cannot restore detail already lost to JPEG compression. PNG can store the decoded pixels losslessly going forward, but it does not create higher-quality source data.

Will the PNG have transparency?
