What Size Mirror Above a Fireplace Mantel?

A mirror over a mantel has less wall to work with than one over a dresser: the mantel shelf is high, and the space between it and the ceiling is often short. Size it to the mantel’s width, then let the height above the shelf decide the shape.

Width from the mantel

As with a dresser, about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel shelf’s width is a common guide — 40–45 in over a 60 in mantel. Some mantels suit a mirror as wide as the firebox opening below; it’s a design choice, not a rule.

Height above a high shelf

6 in kept clear below the ceiling. Where the height cuts the width below the guideline, the suggestion follows the height.

Leaning or hanging

A large mirror can lean on a deep mantel shelf against the wall instead of hanging, which needs no gap and makes the most of a short wall. Secure it against tipping following the maker’s instructions — a leaning mirror over a fireplace is easy to knock.

Heat and safety

  • Check the mirror, its frame, and its finish are suitable above a working fireplace.
  • Follow the fireplace and mirror makers’ guidance on clearances to combustible materials.
  • Use fixings rated for the mirror’s weight and suited to a chimney breast, which may be masonry.

Measure the chimney breast

  1. Measure the mantel shelf’s width and its height from the floor.
  2. Measure the ceiling height above it.
  3. Note any trim, crown molding, or outlets on the chimney breast.
  4. Decide whether the mirror will lean or hang.

Mirror Above a Mantel FAQ

What size mirror goes over a 60 inch mantel?
About 40–45 in wide by the two-thirds-to-three-quarters guide, if the wall height allows. Above a 54 in mantel on a 96 in wall, a 36 in round mirror is the most that fits with 6 in below the ceiling.
How high should a mirror hang above a mantel?
A few inches above the shelf, or resting on it. The higher it starts, the less height is left for the mirror.
Is it safe to hang a mirror over a fireplace?
It depends on the fireplace, the mirror, and the wall. Check heat suitability and clearances with the makers, and use fixings rated for the weight.
Should a mantel mirror be round or rectangular?
On a short wall above a high mantel, a round or landscape mirror often fits better than a tall portrait one. On a tall wall, either works.
Can a mirror lean on the mantel instead of hanging?
Yes, if the shelf is deep enough. Secure it against tipping following the maker’s instructions.
