Round vs Rectangular Mirrors Above Furniture

The width guide for a mirror above furniture is the same whatever its shape. What changes is the height: a portrait rectangle or oval needs much more wall than a round or landscape mirror of the same width, and that decides which shapes fit.

When the wall is short

Above a 54 in mantel on a 96 in wall, with the mirror resting on the shelf and 6 in kept below the ceiling, there are 36 in of height. A portrait mirror at the guideline width won’t fit; a 36 in round mirror does, and so does a landscape rectangle 40–45 in wide and 26.67–36 in tall.

Round mirrors

A round mirror softens the straight lines of a dresser or console and suits a short wall, since it is no taller than it is wide. Because it doesn’t add height, it can look small over a wide piece — at the top of the width range it holds its own.

Rectangles and ovals

  • A portrait rectangle adds height and suits a tall wall or a low piece of furniture.
  • A landscape rectangle echoes a long sideboard or console.
  • An oval sits between the two — curved like a round mirror, tall like a portrait one.

Decide with paper

  1. Cut the shapes you’re considering from paper at full size.
  2. Tape each above the furniture at the planned gap.
  3. Look from across the room and from the doorway.
  4. Keep the one that suits the wall height and the furniture.

Round vs Rectangular Mirrors FAQ

Is a round or rectangular mirror better over a dresser?
Both work at about two-thirds to three-quarters of the dresser’s width. A round one suits a short wall; a portrait rectangle suits a tall one.
What size round mirror goes over a mantel?
Start from about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel’s width, then check the height: on a 96 in wall above a 54 in mantel with 6 in clear below the ceiling, the limit is 36 in across.
How tall is a portrait mirror compared with its width?
Common proportions run about 1.25–1.5 times the width for a rectangle and about 1.33–1.5 times for an oval.
Does a landscape mirror look right over a sideboard?
Often — its long shape echoes the sideboard and it needs little height. Keep it within the sideboard’s width.
Can I mix a round mirror with square furniture?
Yes; the contrast is a common choice. Size the round mirror to the furniture’s width like any other shape.
