How Wide Should a Mirror Be Above a Dresser?
A mirror over a dresser usually looks best at about two-thirds to three-quarters of the dresser’s width and never wider than it. That gives the width; the wall above the dresser decides how tall it can be.

Widths by dresser
| Dresser width | Mirror width (⅔–¾) |
|---|---|
| 36 in | 24–27 in |
| 48 in | 32–36 in |
| 60 in | 40–45 in |
| 72 in | 48–54 in |
Outside size, frame included. A design guideline, not a rule.
Height is limited by the wall
Above a 34 in dresser with a 6 in gap and 6 in kept clear below a 96 in ceiling, there are 50 in for the mirror. A portrait rectangle at 1.25 times its width can then be at most 40 in wide — which is why a wide dresser on a standard wall often ends up with a mirror at the bottom of its width range, or a landscape one.
Frame and glass
The proportions use the outside of the frame. A heavy frame makes the glass noticeably smaller: a 2 in frame takes 4 in off the glass width and height.
Placing it
- Center the mirror over the dresser, not the wall.
- Leave about 4–10 in between the dresser top and the mirror’s bottom.
- Check what it reflects from the bed and the doorway.
Mounting
Mirrors are heavy for their size. Follow the mirror maker’s mounting instructions and use fixings rated for its weight and suited to your wall — a calculator can size a mirror, not a fixing.
Mirror Width Over a Dresser FAQ
- What size mirror goes over a 60 inch dresser?
- About 40–45 in wide by the two-thirds-to-three-quarters guide. The wall height above the dresser decides how tall it can be.
- Should a mirror be wider than the dresser?
- Usually not — a mirror wider than the furniture tends to look top-heavy. Most guides keep it within the dresser’s width.
- How tall can a mirror over a dresser be?
- Wall height less the dresser, the gap above it, and any space you keep below the ceiling. On a 96 in wall above a 34 in dresser with 6 in gaps, that is 50 in.
- What size mirror for a 36 inch dresser?
- About 24–27 in wide by the two-thirds-to-three-quarters guide.
- Does the frame count in the mirror size?
- For proportions, yes — the eye reads the outside of the frame. The glass is smaller by the frame on both sides.
