JPG to AVIF processes files locally in your browser.

What JPG to AVIF conversion does

Convert a JPG or JPEG photo into AVIF when you want a modern delivery format. Encoding uses the browser canvas API and is verified as a real image/avif download.

Smaller files are not guaranteed. Encoding support is Chromium-first today.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

  1. Choose a .jpg or .jpeg file.
  2. Adjust AVIF quality if needed.
  3. Select Convert & download.
  4. Save the .avif file from your downloads.

Why convert JPG to AVIF

AVIF can shrink photographic assets for modern browsers while keeping dimensions intact.

AVIF quality control

The quality slider defaults to 90%. Lower values usually shrink the file and can introduce compression artifacts.

No transparency from JPG

JPG has no alpha channel. This conversion does not invent transparency in the AVIF output.

AVIF encoding compatibility

The tool probes canvas AVIF encoding and checks the blob MIME type. If the browser falls back to PNG or another format, you get a clear error—no mislabeled download and no usage count.

Privacy and local processing

  • Processing occurs locally in the browser.
  • Files are not uploaded to Looty Tools for conversion.
  • Converted images remain on your device.

Limits

  • Inputs: JPG/JPEG only, up to 25.0 MB and 8,192 px per side.
  • Canvas AVIF encoding must succeed with a verified image/avif blob. Support is Chromium-first.
  • EXIF orientation may be applied by the browser during decode; metadata is not preserved in the AVIF output.

JPG to AVIF FAQ

Can every browser create AVIF?
No. Canvas AVIF encoding is Chromium-first today. The tool probes encoding support and verifies the download is image/avif. Unsupported browsers get a clear error instead of a mislabeled PNG.
Is AVIF always smaller than JPG?
Often for modern delivery, but not always. Results depend on the photo and AVIF quality. This tool does not promise a smaller file.
Does conversion restore JPEG detail?
No. JPEG compression already discarded information. AVIF stores the pixels your browser decoded; it cannot restore lost detail.
Does JPG to AVIF add transparency?
No. JPG has no alpha channel, so the AVIF output does not invent transparency.
Can I adjust AVIF quality?
Yes. Use the AVIF quality slider (50%–100%, default 90%).
Are images uploaded?
No. JPG to AVIF runs locally in your browser and does not upload your image to Looty Tools servers.
