How Far Apart Should Gallery Wall Frames Be?
The gap between frames is small, but it decides whether a gallery wall looks like one composition or a scatter of pictures. Most arrangements use a few inches between frame edges, kept identical across the whole wall. This guide covers common gaps and how they change the arrangement’s overall size.

Common gaps
| Gap between edges | Typical effect |
|---|---|
| About 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) | Tight, reads as one block; suits small frames |
| About 2–3 in (5–8 cm) | The most common choice for grids |
| About 4–6 in (10–15 cm) | Airier; suits large frames or a big wall |
These are common choices, not rules — keeping the gap the same everywhere matters more than the exact number.
Edge to edge, not center to center
Gaps are measured between the outside edges of neighbouring frames. Center to center, two matching frames are one frame width plus one gap apart: 16 in frames with a 2 in gap have centers 18 in apart. Mixing the two measurements is the usual reason a grid comes out wider than planned.
How the gap changes the width
| Three 16 in frames, gap | Arrangement width |
|---|---|
| 1.5 in | 51 in |
| 2 in | 52 in |
| 3 in | 54 in |
| 4 in | 56 in |
Across and down can differ
Some layouts use a slightly bigger gap between rows than between columns, especially when frames are wider than they are tall. Whatever you choose, keep each direction consistent — the eye notices one uneven gap far more than a gap that is a little wide everywhere.
Getting the gaps even on the wall
- Cut a spacer from card or wood to the gap width and use it between frames.
- Hang the center frame or row first, then work outward.
- Check gaps with the frames hanging, not just the nail marks; frames can shift on their hooks.
Gallery Wall Frame Spacing FAQ
- What is the standard spacing for gallery wall frames?
- There isn’t a standard, but about 2–3 in (5–8 cm) between frame edges is the most common choice for a grid.
- Is gallery wall spacing measured from the edges or the centers?
- From the edges. Center to center, two matching frames are one frame width plus the gap apart.
- How much wider does a bigger gap make a gallery wall?
- Each gap adds its width once. Three 16 in frames are 52 in wide with 2 in gaps and 56 in wide with 4 in gaps.
- Should the gap between rows match the gap between columns?
- Often it does, but it doesn’t have to. Keep each direction the same throughout the arrangement.
- How do I keep gallery wall gaps even?
- Use a spacer cut to the gap width and hang from the center outward, checking with the frames on their hooks.
