What Size Wall Art for a Blank Wall?

Without furniture to measure against, art is sized to the wall section it hangs on. A piece spanning roughly 60–75% of that section usually looks deliberate; much less and it floats, much more and it crowds the corners.

Measure the section, not the room

A long wall broken by a door or a window is several sections. Size the art to the stretch of wall it actually occupies — between a door frame and a corner, say — rather than the whole wall.

Center height on an open wall

On an open wall, art is usually hung with its center at about 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor, near eye level. With the center at 57 in and a 96 in ceiling, there are 39 in above the center, so a tall portrait piece is limited to 78 in — on a 96 in wall section that caps a 4:3 portrait at about 58.5 in wide.

When the guideline doesn’t fit

  • A low ceiling limits tall pieces before the width rule does.
  • Light switches, thermostats, and outlets reduce the usable section.
  • Very wide walls may suit a pair or a set better than one huge piece.

Test it on the wall

  1. Measure the wall section between its edges.
  2. Mark the planned size with painter’s tape.
  3. Step back to where you’ll usually see it.
  4. Adjust before buying.

Art Size for a Blank Wall FAQ

How big should art be for a blank wall?
About 60–75% of the wall section’s width is a common guide. On a 72 in section that is about 43.2–54 in wide.
What size art for a 10-foot wall?
On a 120 in section, about 72–90 in wide by the 60–75% guide — often better as a set of pieces than one very large one.
What is eye level for hanging art?
About 57–60 in (145–152 cm) to the center of the art is common guidance. It’s a convention, not a rule.
Can a piece be too tall for a wall?
Yes. With the center at 57 in and a 96 in ceiling, there are only 39 in above the center, so the piece can be at most 78 in tall before it reaches the ceiling.
How do I measure a wall section?
From one edge of the stretch the art will occupy to the other — a corner, a door frame, or a window’s trim — at the height the art will hang.
