Diptych and Triptych Wall Art: Sizes and Spacing

A diptych or triptych is sized as one picture and split into panels. Work out the width the whole set should span, take off the gaps between panels, and divide by the number of panels — the set reads as one piece when the gaps are small.

From the whole set to each panel

Each panel = (set width − gaps) ÷ number of panels. Over an 84 in sofa, a balanced set spans 50.4–63 in; with two portrait panels and a 2 in gap, each is 24.2–30.5 in wide, and with three portrait panels and two 2 in gaps, each is about 15.47–19.67 in wide.

Outside sizes, frames included; the set spans 60–75% of the sofa.

How far apart to space the panels

About 2–3 in (5–8 cm) between panels keeps a set reading as one image. Much wider and the panels start to look like separate pictures; tighter than about 1 in and small differences in hanging height show.

Diptych or triptych?

  • Two panels suit a pair of related images or a split landscape.
  • Three panels give a natural center, which suits a centered sofa or bed.
  • Four in a row works on long walls but needs careful, even spacing.

Hanging a set level

  1. Hang the center panel (or the left of a pair) first, at the planned height.
  2. Use a spacer cut to the gap between frames.
  3. Level each panel against its neighbour, not just against the floor.
  4. Step back and check the outside edges line up with the furniture.

Diptych and Triptych Sizing FAQ

How big should each panel of a triptych be?
Take the width the set should span, subtract the gaps, and divide by three. Over an 84 in sofa with 2 in gaps, each portrait panel is about 15.47–19.67 in wide.
How much space between diptych panels?
About 2–3 in (5–8 cm) is common; the smaller the gap, the more the two panels read as one image.
Should a triptych be as wide as one large print?
Size the whole set like one piece — gaps included — so it fills the same share of the furniture or wall.
Can triptych panels be different sizes?
Some sets have a wider center panel. Size the whole set first, then split it; the calculator assumes equal panels.
How do I keep a set of three level?
Hang the middle one first, then use a spacer for the gaps and a level across neighbouring frames.
