What Size Rug for a Bedroom or Dining Room?
Bedrooms and dining rooms each have one big piece the rug is built around. Under a bed, the rug is there for bare feet stepping out at the sides and the foot; under a table, it has to keep the chairs on it when they are pulled out. This guide works through common bed sizes and dining tables.

Under a bed
A common layout starts the rug a little below the headboard — often just below the nightstands — and runs it 18–24 in past each side and the foot. With 18 in at the sides and foot and the rug starting 2 ft below the headboard, the rug has to be the bed’s width plus 3 ft across, and its length minus 6 in along.
| Mattress | Rug needed (across × along) | Smallest common size |
|---|---|---|
| Twin, 38 × 75 in | 6.17 × 5.75 ft | 6 × 9 ft |
| Full, 54 × 75 in | 7.5 × 5.75 ft | 6 × 9 ft |
| Queen, 60 × 80 in | 8 × 6.17 ft | 8 × 10 ft |
| King, 76 × 80 in | 9.33 × 6.17 ft | 8 × 10 ft |
| California King, 72 × 84 in | 9 × 6.5 ft | 8 × 10 ft |
Mattress sizes; a frame adds a few inches. Rugs are turned whichever way covers the bed.
Making the bed rug fit the room
A bed rug usually lies sideways, its long side across the bed. In a small bedroom check the room too: the rug should still leave floor at the walls, and the door should clear it. If the size the bed calls for won’t fit, a pair of runners along the sides is a common alternative.
Under a dining table
The rule that matters is that chairs stay on the rug when someone pulls one out to sit down, so the rug runs at least 24 in past every edge of the table; some prefer 30–36 in. A 6 × 3.5 ft table with 2 ft each side needs 10 × 7.5 ft, so an 8 × 10 ft rug. An 8 × 3.5 ft table needs 12 × 7.5 ft, so a 9 × 12 ft rug.
Round and extending tables
- A 4 ft round table with 2 ft each side needs an 8 ft square; an 8 × 10 ft rectangle covers it, or a round rug of the same size.
- Size for an extending table at the length you use most, or at full length if it opens often.
- Low-pile, flat-woven rugs make chairs easier to slide.
Bedroom & Dining Rug Size FAQ
- What size rug goes under a queen bed?
- An 8 × 10 ft rug turned sideways is common: it covers a rug 8 ft across and about 6.2 ft along the bed with 18 in past the sides and foot, starting 2 ft below the headboard.
- What size rug goes under a king bed?
- An 8 × 10 ft rug covers 9.33 × 6.17 ft — a king with 18 in each side and at the foot. For 24 in at the sides, look at 9 × 12 ft.

- At least 24 in past every edge so pulled-out chairs stay on it; 30–36 in is more comfortable.
- What size rug for a dining table that seats six?
- For a 6 × 3.5 ft table, a rug of about 10 × 7.5 ft, so an 8 × 10 ft rug.

- Usually not. It often starts below the nightstands, so it shows at the sides and foot where you step out of bed.
