Bed Size Fit-in-Room Calculator
Enter the room and the bed — a mattress size with what the frame adds, or the frame’s actual overall size — and the walking space you want on each side to see whether it fits, and how much room is left.
Bed Size Fit-in-Room Calculator calculates in your browser.
A bed that fits the floor isn’t always a bed you can walk around
Bed sizes are sold by the mattress, but the room has to hold the frame, the headboard, and enough space to get in, make the bed, and walk past. A queen mattress is 60 × 80 in; the bed around it, and the walkways, can take more than twice that area.
This calculator builds the footprint from the mattress and the frame — or takes the frame’s overall size exactly — and checks it against the room with the clearances you choose on each side and at the foot. It reports whether the bed physically fits and whether it fits comfortably as separate answers, and tries the other wall too.
How to use the Bed Size Fit-in-Room Calculator
- Choose a unit and enter the room’s width and length, wall to wall.
- Pick which wall the headboard goes on.
- Choose a mattress size and keep or change what the frame adds — or switch to the frame’s actual overall size.
- Enter any gap behind the headboard.
- Set the walking space you want on the left, on the right, and at the foot.
How the calculation works
Mattress + frame: width = mattress + 2 × side allowance; length = headboard + mattress + foot allowance
Overall frame: width × length as entered — nothing added
Along the headboard wall = left + bed width + right
Into the room = gap behind + bed length + foot clearance
A queen mattress is 60 × 80 in; with 1 in of frame at each side, 2 in at the foot, and a 3 in headboard the bed is 62 × 85 in, and with 24 in each side and 30 in at the foot it needs 110 × 115 in.
| Room | Bed and clearances | Space needed | Left / right / foot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 132 × 144 in, headboard on the 132 in wall | Queen + starting allowances; 24 / 24 / 30 in | 110 in × 115 in | 35 in / 35 in / 59 in |
| 120 × 132 in, headboard on the 120 in wall | Frame 82 × 88 in overall; 24 / 24 / 30 in | 130 in × 118 in | 19 in / 19 in / 44 in |
| 300 × 330 cm, headboard on the 300 cm wall | Queen + starting allowances; 60 / 60 / 75 cm | 277.4 cm × 290.7 cm | 71.3 cm / 71.3 cm / 114.3 cm |

Bed Size Fit-in-Room Calculator FAQ
- How big a room do I need for a queen bed?
- With a frame about 62 × 85 in, 24 in at each side, and 30 in at the foot, a queen needs about 110 × 115 in of floor — roughly 9 ft 2 in by 9 ft 7 in — before other furniture.
- Will a king bed fit in an 11 × 12 ft room?
- With the headboard on an 11 ft (132 in) wall, yes: a 78 × 85 in king footprint with 24 in each side and 30 in at the foot needs 126 × 115 in, leaving 6 in to spare across the room.
- How much space should be around a bed?
- About 24 in (60 cm) is a common minimum beside a side you get in and out of, and 30–36 in (75–90 cm) feels comfortable or suits a main walkway. These are guidance, not building codes.
- Is a mattress size the same as the bed’s size?
- No. A frame is usually a little wider and longer than its mattress, and a headboard adds depth. Enter the frame’s listed overall size if you have it — the calculator then uses it exactly, without adding anything.
- Does it allow for doors, closets, and nightstands?
- No. It checks the bed and the walking space you ask for. Check door swings, closet doors, windows, radiators, and other furniture against the space it shows is left.
- Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
