Decimal hours back to hours and minutes
Pay stubs, payroll exports, and time-tracking reports often show hours as decimals — 38.75, 7.5, 0.1 — which are easy to multiply by a rate but hard to picture on a clock. Type the decimal hours and the converter gives the hours and minutes, the h:mm form used on many timesheets, and the exact number of minutes. When a decimal doesn’t land on a whole minute, as with figures exported from spreadsheets or time trackers, it is rounded to the nearest minute and the exact value is shown next to it, down to the second.
How to use the Decimal Hours to Hours & Minutes Converter
- Type the decimal hours, such as 7.5 or 38.75.
- Read the hours and minutes, the h:mm timesheet form, and the exact total minutes.
- If the value isn’t a whole number of minutes, a note shows how it was rounded and the time to the nearest second.
The formula
Total minutes = decimal hours × 60
Hours = whole hours in the total; minutes = what’s left over
The rounding rule is the nearest whole minute, with exactly half a minute (30 seconds) rounding up. A total of 60 minutes carries into the hours, which is why 7.999 hours — 479.94 minutes, or 7 hours 59 minutes 56 seconds — shows as about 8 hours rather than 7 hours 60 minutes. A timesheet figure rounded to 2 places is never more than 0.3 minutes off, so hours and minutes turned into a 2-place decimal always convert back to the same minutes.
| Decimal hours | Hours and minutes | h:mm |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 | 7 hours 30 minutes | 7:30 |
| 8.25 | 8 hours 15 minutes | 8:15 |
| 6.75 | 6 hours 45 minutes | 6:45 |
| 0.1 | 6 minutes | 0:06 |
| 38.75 | 38 hours 45 minutes | 38:45 |
| 7.999 | ≈ 8 hours | 8:00 |

Limitations
- Fractions of a minute are rounded to the nearest minute. Some payroll systems round or truncate differently, so a rounded figure can differ from theirs by a minute.
- Decimal hours from 0 to 10,000, with up to 10 decimal places; negative values aren’t accepted.
- It converts a length of time, not a time of day: 7.5 is 7 hours 30 minutes, not 7:30 AM.

Decimal Hours to Hours & Minutes Converter FAQ
- How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
- Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.5 hours is 7 hours plus 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes, and 8.25 hours is 8 hours 15 minutes.
- What is 0.1 hours in minutes?
- 6 minutes, because 0.1 × 60 = 6. Every tenth of an hour is 6 minutes.
- How are fractions of a minute rounded?
- To the nearest minute, with half a minute rounding up. 7.999 hours is 479.94 minutes, which rounds to 480 — 8 hours 0 minutes. The exact minutes and the time to the nearest second are shown as well.

- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. Your hours, dates, and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
