Hours and minutes to decimal hours
Time clocks and handwritten timesheets record hours and minutes, but payroll and billing systems usually want decimal hours, because a decimal can be multiplied by an hourly rate. The conversion trips people up because minutes look like decimals and aren’t: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25, and 6 hours 45 minutes is 6.75. Type the hours and minutes and the converter divides the minutes by 60, giving the result to the 2 decimal places most timesheets use and to 6 places for when you need more precision.
How to use the Timesheet Hours to Decimal Converter
- Type the whole hours, such as 7.
- Type the minutes, such as 30. Minutes of 60 or more are carried into the hours.
- Read the decimal hours to 2 places, the 6-place figure, and the total minutes.
The formula
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Minutes are sixtieths of an hour, not hundredths, so 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, not 0.15. Minutes that are a multiple of 3 come out to an exact 2-place decimal (6 minutes is 0.1, 45 minutes is 0.75); others repeat forever — 20 minutes is 0.3333… — and are rounded, shown with ≈. The table below lists common minutes.
| Minutes | Decimal hours | To 6 places |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | ≈ 0.08 | ≈ 0.083333 |
| 6 minutes | 0.1 | 0.1 |
| 10 minutes | ≈ 0.17 | ≈ 0.166667 |
| 15 minutes | 0.25 | 0.25 |
| 20 minutes | ≈ 0.33 | ≈ 0.333333 |
| 30 minutes | 0.5 | 0.5 |
| 40 minutes | ≈ 0.67 | ≈ 0.666667 |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 | 0.75 |

- The 2-place result is rounded. Employers may round timesheet entries differently, for example to the nearest quarter hour; this converter doesn’t apply any rounding rule beyond the decimal places shown.

Timesheet Hours to Decimal Converter FAQ
- How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7 + 30 ÷ 60 = 7.5 hours, and 6 hours 45 minutes is 6.75.
- Why is 15 minutes 0.25 and not 0.15?
- Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour, so it is 0.25 decimal hours.
- How many decimal places should a timesheet use?
- Two is the usual convention, but some minutes don’t convert exactly: 20 minutes is 0.3333… hours, shown as 0.33. The converter also gives 6 places for when you need more precision.
- What is 1 minute in decimal hours?
- 1 ÷ 60 = 0.016667 hours to 6 places, which rounds to 0.02 at 2 places.
- Can I enter more than 59 minutes?
- Yes. Minutes of 60 or more are carried into the hours, so 0 hours 90 minutes is 1.5 decimal hours.
- Are the hours and dates I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. Your hours, dates, and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
