Tenths of an Hour to Minutes Chart

Lawyers, consultants, and other professionals often record time in tenths of an hour — 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 — so every entry is a whole number of 6-minute units. This guide lists what each tenth is in minutes, which minutes round to which tenth, and how rounding each entry up or to the nearest tenth changes a total.

Rounding up instead

Some billing policies round every entry up to the next tenth, with 0.1 as the minimum, so 1–6 minutes is 0.1, 7–12 minutes is 0.2, and so on. Under that rule an 8-minute call is 0.2 hours rather than 0.1. Which rule applies is set by the firm or the engagement terms.

How small entries add up

Five separate 2-minute tasks are 10 minutes of work. Rounded up one at a time, they are 5 × 0.1 = 0.5 hours. Rounded to the nearest tenth one at a time, each is 0.0, for a total of 0. Combined into one 10-minute entry, they are 0.2 to the nearest tenth. The rounding unit is small, but applying it per entry instead of per total can change the result a lot.

Back to hours and minutes

A total in tenths converts like any decimal: multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.3 hours is 7 hours 18 minutes, and 12.9 hours is 12 hours 54 minutes.
