Tip and split a bill
Enter the bill, choose a tip — 15, 18, 20, or 25% with one tap, or type any other percentage — and set how many people are paying. You see the tip, the total, and each person’s share, all rounded to the cent. When a total doesn’t divide evenly, the calculator tells you exactly how many people need to pay 1¢ more so the shares add up to the bill, instead of leaving a stray cent unaccounted for.
How to use the Tip Calculator
- Type the bill amount — the subtotal if you tip before tax, or the full bill if you tip on the total.
- Keep the 20% default, tap 15, 18, or 25%, or type your own tip percentage.
- Set the number of people. With more than one, each person’s share is shown first, followed by the tip per person, the total, and the tip.
The formula
tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
each share = total ÷ people, rounded down to the cent
The tip is rounded to the nearest cent. Each share is then rounded down to the cent, and any cents left over are handed out one at a time: $115.00 split 3 ways is $38.33 each with 1 cent over, so 1 person pays $38.34. The leftover is always fewer cents than there are people, so no one ever pays more than 1¢ extra.

Limitations
- It does not add tax or service charges; the tip is calculated on exactly the amount you enter.
- Splits are even. If people ordered different amounts, work out each person’s part of the bill first and use the calculator on each part.
- Tip per person is rounded down to the cent, so it can be a cent or so below the exact share of the tip; the total per person and the note about leftover cents always account for the full bill.
- 1 to 1,000 people, bills up to $1,000,000,000,000. The $ is a label only — the math is the same in any currency.

- How is the tip calculated?
- Bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, rounded to the nearest cent. A 20% tip on $85.50 is $17.10, making $102.60 in total.
- How does splitting the bill work?
- The total with tip is divided by the number of people and rounded down to the cent. If that leaves a few cents over, the calculator says how many people pay 1¢ more so the shares add up to exactly the total — $100 split 3 ways is $33.33 each, with 1 person paying $33.34.
- Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
- Both are common, and customs vary. The calculator tips on whatever amount you enter: enter the subtotal to tip on the pre-tax amount, or the full bill to tip on the total.
- What tip percentage should I use?
- That depends on where you are, the kind of service, and your own judgment. The 15, 18, 20, and 25% buttons are shortcuts, not a recommendation — you can type any percentage, including 0.
- Does the calculator add tax?
- No. It adds only the tip to the amount you enter. Tax rates vary by place, so it doesn’t try to calculate them.
- How many people can I split between?
- Any whole number from 1 to 1,000. With 1 person, the calculator shows just the tip and the total.
- Are the numbers I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The numbers you enter and the results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored; refreshing the page clears them.
