How to Split a Bill and Tip Fairly
Splitting a bill sounds simple until the total doesn’t divide evenly, one person only had a salad, or someone is paying for two. This guide covers the even split, what to do with leftover cents, and fair ways to handle uneven orders.

The even split
- Add the tip to the bill to get the total: $120 plus a 20% tip is $144.
- Divide the total by the number of people: $144 ÷ 4 = $36 each.
Tipping once on the whole bill and then dividing gives the same result as tipping on each share, and it is quicker.
When the total doesn’t divide evenly
$100 split 3 ways is $33.333… each, which can’t be paid to the cent. Round each share down to $33.33 and three shares come to $99.99 — 1 cent short — so 1 person pays $33.34.
The number of people who pay an extra cent is always the number of cents left over after rounding down. $120 split 7 ways rounds down to $17.14 each, which is $119.98 for seven people, so 2 people pay $17.15. The leftover is always fewer cents than there are people, so nobody pays more than 1 cent extra.
Uneven orders
- Itemize: each person adds up their own items, then adds the same tip percentage to their part.
- Split shared dishes evenly first, then add each person’s own items.
- If one person ordered much less, a straight even split can feel unfair — agree on the approach before the bill arrives.
