How much a few percent changes
On a $60 bill, each percentage point adds 60 cents. Moving from 18% to 20% adds $1.20, and from 15% to 20% adds $3.00. The gap between percentages grows in proportion to the bill.
Customs vary
In the United States, etiquette guides commonly suggest around 15 to 20 percent for sit-down restaurant service. Elsewhere expectations can be very different: in some countries a service charge is added to the bill, and in others tipping is uncommon or a small round-up is usual. When travelling, check local guidance.
Questions to ask before choosing
- Is a service charge already on the bill? If so, an additional tip may not be expected.
- Are you tipping on the subtotal or on the total including tax? Both are common.
- Was it table service, counter service, or delivery? Expectations often differ.
- On a very small bill, would you rather leave a minimum amount than a percentage that comes to a few cents?
