How to use the Percentage Calculator

The formula

“Percent” means “per hundred”, so 20% is 20 hundredths, or 0.2. Multiplying 150 by 0.2 gives 30. Because multiplication works in either order, X% of Y always equals Y% of X — 20% of 150 and 150% of 20 are both 30, which is a handy trick when one way round is easier to do in your head.

Limitations

• It answers one question: what is X% of Y. To compare an old value with a new one, use the Percentage Change Calculator; to find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100.
• Numbers can be up to 1,000,000,000,000,000 with up to 10 decimal places. Results show up to 10 decimal places, and very large or very small results use scientific notation such as 1e+27.
• Use a period for decimals. Commas are read only as thousands separators, as in 1,250.

Percentage Calculator FAQ

How do I find a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For 20% of 150 that is 150 × 20 ÷ 100 = 30. The calculator shows this working under every result.

Can the percentage be more than 100?

Yes. 250% of 80 is 200 — more than the number itself, because 250% means two and a half times the number. 100% of a number is the number unchanged.

Does it work with decimals and negative numbers?

Yes. 12.5% of 80 is 10, and 20% of −150 is −30. On phones whose number keypad has no minus key, use the ± button next to a box to make that value negative.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

This calculator answers “what is X% of Y”. To go the other way, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 30 is 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20% of 150. To compare an old value with a new one, use the Percentage Change Calculator.

Can I type a % sign or thousands separators?

Yes. “20%” and “1,250” are both understood. Use a period for decimals: “12,5” is not read as twelve and a half, and the box says so.

How precise are the results?

Results show up to 10 decimal places with trailing zeros removed, and tiny binary rounding errors such as 0.30000000000000004 are cleaned up to 0.3. Very large or very small results switch to scientific notation, such as 1e+27.
