Add sales tax to a price
Checking a receipt, pricing something for sale, or budgeting a purchase: enter the price before tax and the sales tax rate, and the tax and total appear as you type. Decimal rates such as 6.625% work exactly. The calculator doesn’t know the rate where you are — enter the rate that applies to your purchase, and treat the result as arithmetic, not tax advice.
How to use the Sales Tax Calculator
- Type the price before tax. A $ sign and thousands separators such as 1,299.00 are fine.
- Type the sales tax rate as a percentage, for example 6.625.
- Read the total and the tax. Copy Result copies a line such as “$100.00 + 6.625% sales tax ($6.63) = $106.63”.
The method
tax = price × tax rate ÷ 100, rounded to the cent
total = price + tax
A sales tax rate is a percentage of the price, so 6.625% means 6.625 cents of tax on every dollar. The tax is rounded to the nearest cent before it is added, which keeps the tax and the total consistent: 6.625% of $100 is $6.625, shown as $6.63, and the total is $106.63.
| Rate and price | Sales tax | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 6.625% on $100.00 | $6.63 | $106.63 |
| 8.25% on $49.95 | $4.12 | $54.07 |
| 7% on $19.99 | $1.40 | $21.39 |
| 10.25% on $1,299.00 | $133.15 | $1,432.15 |
| 0% on $250.00 | $0.00 | $250.00 |

Limitations
- One rate at a time. If state and local rates are listed separately, add them together and enter the combined rate.
- No rate lookup, exemptions, or shipping charges — it doesn’t know which rate applies to a purchase.
- The tax is rounded once, on the whole price. Stores that tax and round each item separately can end up a cent different.
- Prices up to $1,000,000,000,000. The $ is a display label, and the math is the same in any currency.

Sales Tax Calculator FAQ
- How do I calculate sales tax?
- Multiply the price by the tax rate and divide by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. At 6.625%, the tax on $100 is $6.625, which rounds to $6.63, so the total is $106.63.
- Which sales tax rate should I use?
- That depends on where the sale happens and what is being bought — rates can differ by state, county, and city, and some items are taxed at a reduced rate or not at all. This calculator doesn’t look up rates; enter the combined rate from an official source for your area.
- How is the tax rounded?
- The tax is rounded to the nearest cent (half a cent rounds up) and the total is the price plus that rounded tax, so the two always add up. Stores may round per item rather than per receipt, so a register total can differ by a cent.
- How do I find the price before tax from a total?
- Divide the total by 1 plus the rate divided by 100. At 6.625%, a total of $106.63 came from $106.63 ÷ 1.06625 ≈ $100.00. This calculator adds tax; the guides explain working backward.
- Can I use it for VAT or GST?
- The arithmetic is the same for any tax added on top of a price as a percentage. Where VAT or GST is already included in the shown price, adding it again would double-count it.
- Is this tax advice?
- No. It is an arithmetic tool: it shows what a given rate adds to a given price. It doesn’t decide which rate or exemptions apply to you.
- Are the numbers I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The numbers you enter and the results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored; refreshing the page clears them.
