How to Find the Price Before Sales Tax
Sometimes you only know the total — a receipt, a budget line, a quote that includes tax — and need the price and the tax separately. The method is a division, not a subtraction, and this guide shows why.

Divide by 1 plus the rate
A total that includes tax is the price multiplied by (1 + rate ÷ 100). To undo that, divide: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 7%, a total of $85.60 came from $85.60 ÷ 1.07 = $80.00, so the tax was $5.60.
Why subtracting the rate is wrong
Taking 7% off $85.60 gives $79.61 — 39 cents too low. The tax was 7% of the original price, not of the total, so removing 7% of the larger total takes off too much.
Worked examples
| Total with tax | Rate | Price before tax | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| $85.60 | 7% | $80.00 | $5.60 |
| $106.63 | 6.625% | $100.00 | $6.63 |
| $54.07 | 8.25% | $49.95 | $4.12 |
| $32.40 | 8% | $30.00 | $2.40 |
When the answer is a fraction of a cent off
Because the tax on the original price was rounded, dividing can land between cents: $106.63 ÷ 1.06625 is $100.0047. Round to the cent, then check by adding the tax back with the Sales Tax Calculator — $100.00 at 6.625% gives $106.63 again.
Prices that already include a tax, such as VAT-inclusive prices, are worked back the same way.
Price Before Tax FAQ
- How do I remove sales tax from a total?
- Divide the total by 1 plus the rate ÷ 100. At 8%, $32.40 ÷ 1.08 = $30.00.
- Why can’t I just subtract the tax rate from the total?
- The rate was applied to the smaller, pre-tax price. Taking the same percentage off the total removes too much.
- How do I find just the tax in a total?
- Subtract the price before tax from the total, or multiply the total by rate ÷ (100 + rate). At 7%, $85.60 × 7 ÷ 107 = $5.60.
- Why is my answer a fraction of a cent off?
- The original tax was rounded to the cent. Round the price to the cent and check it by adding the tax back.
- Does this work for VAT-inclusive prices?
- Yes. The arithmetic is the same for any percentage tax included in a price.
