GIF to PNG processes files locally in your browser. This tool is for static GIF conversion only.

What GIF to PNG conversion does

Convert a static GIF image into a lossless PNG file directly in your browser.

This tool is for static GIF conversion only. If you upload an animated GIF, only the first displayed frame is converted to PNG. The downloaded PNG will not be animated — animation is never preserved by this tool.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Choose a .gif file.
  2. Select Convert & download.
  3. Save the .png file from your browser downloads.

Only the first frame converts

GIF files can store many animation frames in one file. This tool decodes and converts only the first displayed frame. Additional frames are not extracted, converted, or included in the download, and the output PNG is always a single still image.

Transparency and lossless output

PNG encoding here is lossless, so there is no quality slider. Transparency is kept when the first frame of the GIF uses a transparent color and your browser decodes it with an alpha channel — this tool does not flatten onto a background the way JPEG output tools do.

Privacy and local processing

  • Processing occurs locally in the browser.
  • Files are not uploaded to Looty Tools for conversion.
  • Converted images remain on your device.

Limits and known issues

  • Inputs: GIF (.gif) only, up to 25.0 MB and 8,192 px per side.
  • Animated GIF files: only the first frame is converted. Animation is never preserved by this tool.
  • Decoding uses your browser's built-in image support. Unusual or corrupted GIF variants may fail to decode.
  • Metadata is not preserved in the downloaded PNG.

GIF to PNG FAQ

Does this convert animated GIFs?
This tool is for static GIF conversion only. If you upload an animated GIF, only the first frame is converted to PNG — the output will not be animated.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser using native browser image decoding. Your file is not uploaded to Looty Tools servers for this workflow.
Does this preserve GIF transparency?
Transparency is kept when the first frame of the GIF uses a transparent color index and your browser decodes it with an alpha channel. PNG supports transparency, so it is not flattened onto a background.
Is the conversion lossless?
Yes. PNG uses lossless compression, so no image detail is discarded during conversion.
What GIF files are accepted?
Files with a .gif extension and a valid GIF87a or GIF89a header are accepted. Renamed or corrupted files are rejected before decoding.
Are image dimensions preserved?
Yes. The output PNG keeps the same pixel dimensions as the source GIF frame.
