How to Convert GIF to PNG in Your Browser

GIF stores images with a limited, indexed color palette and can hold multiple animation frames, while PNG is a lossless, full-color format built for exact pixel fidelity. How GIF becomes PNG

  1. The browser decodes the GIF’s LZW-compressed, indexed-color data — up to 256 palette colors — into a full grid of RGB pixel values, the same step a browser performs just to display the image.
  2. Only the first displayed frame is decoded. This tool is for static GIF conversion only, so any additional animation frames, their timing, and the loop count are never read.
  3. If the first frame uses a transparent palette color, that binary on/off transparency carries into the decoded pixels as an alpha channel, rather than being discarded.
  4. The decoded pixel grid is re-encoded losslessly as PNG using the browser’s built-in encoder — no quality setting is applied, because nothing about PNG encoding here is lossy.

What changes when you convert

Color accuracy doesn’t improve just because PNG can store millions of colors — the pixels being encoded were already limited to whatever the GIF’s 256-color palette produced. PNG simply stops any further loss from happening; it doesn’t recover detail the GIF’s palette had already discarded.

File size can move in either direction. GIF’s palette-based LZW compression is efficient for flat, simple graphics — the kind GIF is usually used for — while PNG stores full RGB(A) pixel data with general-purpose compression. For that reason, a PNG converted from a simple graphic GIF can end up close in size to the source, or occasionally larger, even though no image data was added.

Transparency changes from an indexed palette trick into a real alpha channel. Nothing is flattened onto a background — a pixel that was transparent in the GIF stays transparent in the PNG, exactly as it was.

When PNG is the right choice — and when it isn’t

PNG is the right target when you need the frame’s pixels preserved exactly — a logo, icon, or graphic pulled from a GIF that you plan to edit further, place on a different background, or reuse where hard-edged transparency matters. Its lossless encoding means nothing more is lost after this conversion.

It’s the wrong target if the source GIF is genuinely animated and you need to keep the motion — this conversion, like every static-GIF converter on Looty Tools, only ever reads the first frame. Limitations and privacy
