Convert speeds between road, science, and navigation units

Reading a speed limit abroad, a wind speed in knots, or a physics answer in meters per second: type the speed, choose the units, and the result appears as you type, with the same speed in every other unit. Road units, scientific units, and the knot used at sea and in the air are all included.

How to use the Speed Converter

  1. Type the speed to convert. Decimals, thousands separators such as 1,250, and negative values are accepted.
  2. Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you are converting to. Swap units flips them and keeps your value.
  3. Read the result, the conversion factor, and the same value in every other unit. Copy Result copies the main conversion; Reset returns to the starting example.

The method

result = value × (m/s per From unit) ÷ (m/s per To unit)

1 mph = 1.609344 km/h · 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h · 1 knot = 1.852 km/h

A speed unit is a length unit divided by a time unit, so its factor follows from exact length definitions: a mile per hour is 1,609.344 meters per 3,600 seconds, and a knot is one nautical mile (1,852 meters) per hour. That is why 60 mph is exactly 96.56064 km/h. The converter keeps full precision and rounds only the displayed result to 10 significant digits.

Converted on your device

  • The conversion runs in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.
  • The values you enter and the results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored.
  • The converter area is masked from session-recording analytics, so what you enter isn’t captured in recordings.

Limitations

  • It converts speed units only; it doesn’t calculate speed from a distance and a time.
  • Negative values are converted as ordinary arithmetic, which can describe movement in the opposite direction.
  • Mach numbers are not included, because the speed of sound depends on air temperature.
  • Results are shown to up to 10 significant digits.

Speed Converter FAQ

How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply by 1.609344. 60 miles per hour is exactly 96.56064 kilometers per hour.
How do I convert meters per second to km/h?
Multiply by 3.6, because an hour has 3,600 seconds and a kilometer 1,000 meters. 10 m/s is 36 km/h.
What is a knot?
One nautical mile per hour: exactly 1.852 km/h, or about 1.150779448 mph. It is the standard speed unit at sea and in aviation.
Why do ships and aircraft use knots?
The nautical mile was historically based on one minute of latitude, which makes it convenient for navigation with charts. It is now defined as exactly 1,852 meters.
What does a negative speed mean?
Speed itself can’t be negative, but a negative value can describe velocity in the opposite direction. The converter converts it as ordinary arithmetic.
How accurate are the conversions?
Every factor comes from exact definitions, and results are shown to up to 10 significant digits.
Are the values I convert sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser as you type. The values you enter and the results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the converter area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page resets it.
