Work out a sales commission
Most commission checks come down to one of two rules: a percentage of what you sold, or a fixed amount for each sale. Returns and refunds usually come off first, and a base salary sits alongside. This calculator applies one rate, a flat amount per sale, or both, shows how much the returns cost you, and gives the effective rate so a flat-per-sale plan can be compared with a percentage plan. It is for salespeople checking a statement, managers sanity-checking a payout, and anyone comparing a job offer’s base and commission.
How to use the Sales Commission Calculator
- Enter your total sales for the period, and any returns or refunds.
- Choose how commission is paid: a percentage of sales, a flat amount per sale, or both.
- Enter the rate, or the amount per sale and the number of sales that weren’t returned.
- To see total pay, choose “Add base pay” and enter the base for the same period.
- Read the commission, the effective rate on net sales, and the commission lost to returns.
The formula
Net sales = sales − returns and refunds
Percentage commission = net sales × commission rate
Flat commission = number of sales × amount per sale
Effective rate = total commission ÷ net sales
$2,000 of returns costs $100 of a 5% commission. A flat $150 a sale on $48,000 works out to 3.75% — lower than 5% here, though the same flat amount on smaller sales would be worth more.
| Sales | Plan | Commission | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | 5% of sales | $2,500.00 | 5% |
| $50,000 less $2,000 returned | 5% of net sales | $2,400.00 | 5% |
| $48,000 from 12 sales | $150 per sale | $1,800.00 | 3.75% |
| $48,000 from 12 sales | 5% + $150 per sale | $4,200.00 | 8.75% |
| $1,234.56 | 7.5% of sales | $92.59 | 7.4998% |

Limitations
- This applies one commission rate and/or a flat amount per sale to the figures you enter. Real plans may use tiers, quotas, draws, caps, splits, or clawbacks, and may pay commission on a later date. Taxes and deductions aren’t included.
- One percentage rate for all sales. Tiered or accelerating rates — a higher rate above a quota, for example — are not handled here.
- Returns reduce the sales a percentage applies to; a flat amount per sale uses the count of sales you enter, so leave returned sales out of it.
- Sales up to $1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000 sales; money is rounded to the cent.

Sales Commission Calculator FAQ
- How do you calculate sales commission?
- Multiply the sales the commission is paid on by the commission rate. $48,000 in net sales at 5% is $2,400.
- Do returns reduce commission?
- Usually — most plans pay on net sales. $50,000 in sales with $2,000 returned leaves $48,000, so a 5% commission is $2,400 instead of $2,500. Some plans pay first and take returned commission back later as a chargeback.
- What is a flat commission per sale?
- A fixed amount for each sale, whatever its price — common for cars, policies, and subscriptions. 12 sales at $150 each is $1,800.
- What is an effective commission rate?
- Commission ÷ net sales. $2,400 + $1,800 = $4,200 on $48,000 of sales is an effective rate of 8.75%, which lets you compare a flat-per-sale plan with a percentage plan.
- How do I work out total pay with a base salary?
- Add the base pay for the same period to the commission. $3,000 base plus $2,500 commission is $5,500, with commission making up about 45% of it.
- Are the amounts I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The amounts, rates, and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
