PDF to EPUB processes files locally in your browser.

Convert PDF to a real EPUB ebook in your browser

Turn a text-based PDF into a genuine, validated EPUB 3 ebook package. Everything runs locally so your file stays on your device. A PDF is a fixed-layout format; EPUB is reflowable, so text is restructured to adapt to any screen rather than kept pixel-for-pixel identical to the source.

How to convert PDF to EPUB

  1. Choose or drop a PDF file.
  2. The tool checks the PDF has real, extractable text.
  3. Convert to EPUB.
  4. Download the resulting .epub file.

What gets reconstructed

  • Page order, preserved as one EPUB chapter per PDF page.
  • Headings and paragraphs, detected from font size and spacing.
  • Simple, regularly-gridded tables as real EPUB tables (best-effort).
  • Ordinary embedded raster images (photos, scanned figures, logos placed as their own image object).

Browser privacy

  • Processing occurs locally in the browser.
  • Files are not uploaded to Looty Tools.
  • Conversion results remain on your device.

Limits

  • Maximum file size is 25 MB, up to 50 pages.
  • Scanned or image-only PDFs have no extractable text and are rejected with a clear message — this tool does not perform OCR.
  • Fixed-layout PDF content is inherently lossy to reflow: multi-column layouts, exact positioning, and complex page graphics are not preserved — text reflows to fit the reading device instead.
  • Two specific image types are not extracted: 1-bit stencil image masks (line art painted with the current fill color rather than its own pixel data) and tiled/repeated image patterns. When either is found, the EPUB still generates, a note is left where the image would have appeared, and the tool tells you afterward — nothing is silently dropped.
  • Table reconstruction is best-effort: irregular or merged-cell tables may come through as plain text instead of a real table.
  • Chapters are created one per PDF page — a PDF has no built-in chapter concept, so this keeps page order simple and predictable.
  • Every generated EPUB is independently validated for structural correctness (mimetype, container, package document, navigation) before it is offered for download.

PDF to EPUB FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion runs locally in the browser. Your PDF is not uploaded to Looty Tools.
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
No. Scanned or image-only PDFs have no extractable text and are detected and rejected with a clear message. This tool does not perform OCR.
Will the EPUB look exactly like the PDF?
No, and it is not meant to. A PDF is a fixed-layout format (an exact position for every line and column on every page); EPUB is a reflowable format meant to adapt to any screen and font size. Converting fixed-layout content into a reflowable one is inherently lossy: multi-column layouts, precise positioning, and complex page graphics are not preserved. What is preserved is page order, extracted text, detected headings and paragraphs, Unicode text, and simple regularly-gridded tables on a best-effort basis.
Are images preserved?
Ordinary embedded raster images (the common case — a photo, scanned figure, or logo placed on the page as its own image object) are extracted and embedded in the EPUB. Two specific cases are not extracted: 1-bit stencil image masks (line-art painted using the current fill color rather than its own pixel data) and tiled/repeated image patterns. When either is detected, the EPUB still generates successfully, a note is left in the chapter where the image would have appeared, and the tool tells you afterward that some images could not be extracted — nothing is preserved silently or dropped without mention.
Are tables preserved?
Simple, regularly-gridded tables are reconstructed as real EPUB tables on a best-effort basis. Irregular or merged-cell tables may come through as plain text instead.
How are chapters created?
Each PDF page becomes one EPUB chapter, listed in order in the table of contents. A PDF has no built-in chapter concept, so this keeps page order simple and predictable rather than guessing where chapters should be merged.
What is the maximum PDF size?
The maximum file size is 25 MB, with up to 50 pages.
Is the output a real, valid EPUB file?
Yes. The tool builds a genuine EPUB 3 package by hand (mimetype file, container.xml, an OPF package document, and both an EPUB3 navigation document and an EPUB2 NCX for older-reader compatibility) and independently validates its structure before the download starts — it is not a renamed ZIP or HTML file.
Will it open correctly in Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo?
The output is a standard EPUB 3 package with EPUB2 NCX compatibility included, so it should open in mainstream reading apps that support EPUB, including Apple Books and Kobo. Kindle devices historically expect Amazon’s own formats (AZW/KFX) or accept EPUB only via Amazon’s "Send to Kindle" conversion step — check your specific Kindle app or device’s current EPUB support before relying on a direct transfer.
