Count paragraphs without counting by hand

Assignments ask for “three to five paragraphs”, grant forms cap answers at two, and editors flag drafts with one wall of text. Paste your writing or upload a document and the paragraph count appears immediately, together with the average number of words per paragraph — a quick check on whether your paragraphs are well balanced or one has grown far longer than the rest.

How to count paragraphs

1. Type or paste your text into the box, or choose Upload Document to open a .txt, .md, .docx, or .pdf file.
2. Read the paragraph count at the top. It updates as you type, with no button to press.
3. Use average words per paragraph, word count, sentences, lines, and reading time below to judge paragraph length.
4. Split or merge paragraphs in the box and watch the count change, then Copy Text to take the edited version back.

What counts as a paragraph

In plain text there is no hidden paragraph marker, so the counter uses one simple rule: every line that contains text is one paragraph.

• Blank lines are ignored, so one blank line, several blank lines, or none between paragraphs all give the same count.
• A line that contains only spaces or tabs counts as blank.
• Text pasted from Word, Google Docs, or most websites puts each paragraph on its own line, so it counts correctly.
• A heading, list item, or caption on its own line counts as a paragraph too — leave them out if you only want body paragraphs.
• Windows line breaks and a trailing blank line at the end make no difference.

Your text stays on your device

• Paragraphs are counted by JavaScript running in your browser.
• Your text is never uploaded to Looty Tools or any other server.
• Uploaded documents are opened and read in your browser; the file itself is never sent to Looty Tools.
• Nothing is stored — refreshing or closing the page clears the box.

Limitations

• Uploads accept .txt and .md files up to 5 MB, Word .docx files up to 15 MB, and PDFs up to 25 MB and 50 pages. Older .doc files are not supported, and scanned or image-only PDFs have no text to count.
• Hard-wrapped text, such as plain-text email or poetry with a line break at the end of every line, counts each line as a paragraph. Join wrapped lines first for an accurate count.
• PDFs do not store paragraphs, so a PDF’s count depends on how its lines are grouped when the text is extracted and can differ from the original document’s.
• The counter does not judge whether a paragraph is complete or well organized — only where it starts and ends.

Paragraph Counter FAQ

How does the Paragraph Counter decide what a paragraph is?

Every line that contains text counts as one paragraph. Lines that are empty or contain only spaces or tabs are skipped, so it does not matter whether your paragraphs are separated by one blank line, several, or none.

Why is my paragraph count higher than I expected?

Headings, list items, captions, and lines of a poem each sit on their own line, so each one counts. Text that was hard-wrapped with a line break at the end of every line — common in plain-text email — also counts each line. Join wrapped lines back into paragraphs before counting.

Does it work with text pasted from Word or Google Docs?

Yes. When you paste from a word processor, each paragraph usually arrives on its own line with a single line break between them, which is exactly what the counter measures.

What does “average words per paragraph” tell me?

It is your total word count divided by your paragraph count. A high average suggests long, dense blocks of text that may be worth splitting; a very low one often means many headings or one-line paragraphs are included.

Can I upload a Word document or PDF instead of pasting?

Yes. Upload Document accepts .txt, .md, Word .docx, and text-based .pdf files, or you can drop a file onto the text box. The file is read in your browser — it is not sent to Looty Tools — and its text replaces whatever is in the box. Scanned PDFs without a text layer and older .doc files are not supported.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. Paragraphs are counted by your browser and the text never leaves your device. Nothing is saved — refreshing the page clears the box.
