How long will this take to read?
Readers decide whether to start an article, email, or report partly on how long it will take. This calculator turns your text into a reading time you can put in a “5 min read” label, a newsletter intro, or a meeting agenda — and a read-aloud time for scripts, speeches, and voice-overs. Both are based on published average reading speeds rather than a guessed number, and both update as you edit.
How to calculate reading time
- Paste or type your text, or choose Upload Document to open a .txt, .md, .docx, or .pdf file.
- Read the estimated silent reading time at the top, shown in minutes and seconds.
- Check the read-aloud time and the word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts below it.
- Trim or expand the text in the box to hit a target length; the times update instantly.
The speeds behind the estimate
- Reading time divides your word count by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading rate for adults reading non-fiction in English.
- Reading aloud divides the same word count by 183 words per minute, the average adult reading-aloud rate.
- Both figures come from a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading-speed studies by Marc Brysbaert, published in the Journal of Memory and Language.
- Times are rounded to the nearest second, so 1,000 words is about 4 min 12 sec to read and 5 min 28 sec aloud.
- The word count is the same one the Word Counter uses, so identical text gives identical times on both tools.
Your text stays on your device
- Reading time is calculated by JavaScript in your browser.
- Your text is never uploaded to Looty Tools or any other server.
- Uploaded documents are opened and read in your browser; the file itself is never sent to Looty Tools.
- Nothing is stored — refreshing or closing the page clears the box.
Limitations
- Uploads accept .txt and .md files up to 5 MB, Word .docx files up to 15 MB, and PDFs up to 25 MB and 50 pages. Older .doc files are not supported, and scanned or image-only PDFs have no text to count.
- Estimates are averages. Technical or unfamiliar material, small screens, and second-language reading are usually slower than the estimate.
- Images, charts, tables, and code are not timed — only the words in the box.
- The read-aloud time does not include pauses, slides, or audience reactions, so live talks usually run longer.
- Chinese, Japanese, and Thai text written without spaces is counted as far fewer words than it contains, so its reading time is underestimated.

- What reading speed does the calculator use?
- 238 words per minute for silent reading — the average adult rate for non-fiction in English reported by a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading-speed studies (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language). The estimate is your word count divided by that speed, rounded to the nearest second.
- What is the “Reading aloud” time?
- It uses 183 words per minute, the average adult reading-aloud rate from the same meta-analysis. It is a useful starting point for a speech, podcast script, or voice-over; a live presentation with pauses and slides usually runs longer.
- Will this match the Word Counter’s reading time?
- Yes. Both tools use the same word count and the same speed, so identical text always gives an identical estimate on either page.
- Are images, tables, or code included in the estimate?
- No. Only the words in the box are counted. Charts, images, tables, and code take readers longer than their word count suggests, so add time for them.
- How accurate is a reading-time estimate?
- It is an average, not a prediction for a particular reader. Unfamiliar or technical material, reading on a small screen, and reading in a second language are usually slower; familiar, simple text can be faster.
- Can I upload a Word document or PDF instead of pasting?
- Yes. Upload Document accepts .txt, .md, Word .docx, and text-based .pdf files, or you can drop a file onto the text box. The file is read in your browser — it is not sent to Looty Tools — and its text replaces whatever is in the box. Scanned PDFs without a text layer and older .doc files are not supported.
- Is my text sent to a server?
- No. The estimate is calculated in your browser, and your text is never uploaded to Looty Tools or saved. Refreshing the page clears it.
