Meters to Feet and Inches: How to Convert Heights
Heights are often given in meters or centimeters in one place and in feet and inches in another. Converting to a single number of feet is easy; splitting it into feet and inches takes one extra step. This guide shows both, with a table of common heights.

Meters to feet
A foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so divide by 0.3048 — or multiply by 3.280839895. A height of 1.75 meters is 1.75 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.741469816 feet.
Splitting into feet and inches
- Convert the height to inches by dividing by 0.0254: 1.75 m ÷ 0.0254 = 68.8976 inches.
- Divide by 12 for whole feet: 68.8976 inches is 5 feet, with 8.8976 inches left over.
- Round the inches: 1.75 m is about 5 ft 9 in.

Feet and inches back to meters
Turn the height into inches first, then multiply by 0.0254. 5 ft 11 in is 5 × 12 + 11 = 71 inches, and 71 × 0.0254 = 1.8034 meters.

- How tall is 2 meters in feet and inches?
- 2 meters is 78.74 inches, or about 6 ft 6.7 in.
- How tall is 6 feet in meters?
- Exactly 1.8288 meters, since 6 feet is 72 inches of 2.54 cm each.
- What is 5 ft 10 in in centimeters?
- 5 ft 10 in is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm.
- Why don’t metric heights convert to whole inches?
- An inch is 2.54 cm, so a round number of centimeters almost never lands on a whole number of inches. Rounding to the nearest inch is normal for heights.
- Should I round up or down?
- Round to the nearest inch for everyday use. For anything that must fit — clearance under a doorway, for example — keep the extra decimal places.
