Desk Size for Room Calculator calculates in your browser.

A desk needs room in front of it, not just against the wall

Most desks fit against a wall. The question is whether the chair can come out, whether you can get to it, and whether the desk is wide enough for what goes on it. A desk that fits the wall can still leave a chair jammed against a bed or a door swing.

This calculator places the desk against the wall you choose — centered or in a corner, straight, L-shaped, or corner — and adds the chair space in front of it. It finds the widest desk that keeps both inside the room and off anything you reserve, compares every other placement, and, if you add the doorway, checks for a walking route to the chair.

How to use the Desk Size for Room Calculator

  1. Choose a unit and enter the room’s length (left to right) and width (top to bottom), as on the plan.
  2. Pick the wall and where along it the desk goes, and the desk type.
  3. Choose what it holds, and keep or change the desktop depth.
  4. Keep or change the chair space and the walkway you want; reserve any area that must stay clear.
  5. Optionally enter a desk width to check, and the doorway to check the route to the chair.

How the calculation works

Desk footprint = desktop (plus the return for an L-shaped or corner desk)

Chair zone = the chair space in front of the desktop

Largest desk = widest desktop whose desk and chair zone stay in the room and off reserved areas

Behind the chair = room depth − desk depth − chair space (or to the nearest reserved area)

In a 132 × 120 in room with a 24 in deep desk on the top wall and 36 in of chair space, 120 − 24 − 36 leaves 60 in behind the chair.

Limitations

  • The room is a rectangle and the desk stands against one wall; desks floating in the room or angled aren’t modelled.
  • Workspace widths are starting assumptions, not requirements of any monitor or desk — enter your own minimum.
  • Doors, windows, radiators, and closets only count when entered as reserved areas.
  • The route check models a person as a disc as wide as your walkway; furniture not entered isn’t counted.
  • Clearances are planning figures, not building codes.

Desk Size for Room Calculator FAQ

What size desk fits my room?
It depends on the wall you use and the space in front of it. The calculator finds the widest desk whose desktop and chair space stay in the room and clear of anything you reserve, then suggests a width for what the desk holds.
How much space do I need behind a desk chair?
About 36 in (91 cm) from the desk’s edge lets you pull a chair out and get up. If people walk behind you, add a walkway — about 30 in is tight but usable and 36 in is comfortable. These are planning figures, not rules.
How wide should a desk be for two monitors?
The calculator starts from about 48 in wide and 24 in deep for two monitors, roomier at 60 in. Two large monitors side by side can need more, so enter your own narrowest width to replace the starting value.
Will an L-shaped desk fit in a small room?
Check it in the corner you have in mind. In a 120 × 84 in room, a 60 in L-shaped desk with a 48 in return in a corner of a long wall fits with its 36 in chair space, but leaves only 24 in behind the chair — less than a 30 in walkway.
Why add the doorway?
Space behind the chair isn’t the same as being able to reach it. With a doorway entered, the calculator checks for a continuous walking route from just inside the door to the chair space, not just one wide gap.
Are the measurements I enter sent anywhere?
No. The check runs in your browser as you type. Your measurements and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
