Desk Depth for Laptop and Dual-Monitor Setups

Desk depth decides how far your eyes are from the screen and how much room is left behind your chair. A deeper desk is kinder to your eyes with big monitors; a shallower one gives the room back. The trade is easy to see in inches.

Depth and screen distance

With a laptop the screen sits at the back of the keyboard, so a 20 in (51 cm) desk is often enough. A monitor stands behind the keyboard, and the deeper the desk the further back it can go — about 24 in (61 cm) is a common starting point with monitors and 30 in (76 cm) gives large screens more distance.

What depth costs the room

Two monitors side by side

Two monitors usually need width more than depth: they sit next to each other, often angled in. Start from about 48 in wide and 24 in deep and add for large screens or speakers. If the desk can’t be wider, a monitor arm lets the screens sit over the back edge and frees depth.

Signs the desk is too shallow

  • The keyboard sits at the very front edge with no room for wrists.
  • The monitor is so close you have to move your head to read the corners.
  • Papers or a notebook have nowhere to go in front of the keyboard.

Choosing between two depths

  1. Measure the monitors’ stands front to back.
  2. Add a keyboard and a little room for wrists in front of them.
  3. Check the space left behind the chair at each depth.
  4. Pick the shallowest depth that keeps the screen at a comfortable distance.

Desk Depth Guide FAQ

What desk depth do I need for a laptop?
About 20 in (51 cm) is a common starting point, since the screen sits at the back of the keyboard.
Is 24 inches deep enough for two monitors?
Often, as a starting point. Large screens benefit from more distance; a 30 in deep desk or a monitor arm helps.
How much floor does a deeper desk use?
Every inch of depth comes off the space behind the chair. In a 120 in room, going from a 24 in to a 30 in deep desk cuts that space from 60 in to 54 in.
Can a monitor arm replace desk depth?
It can help: the arm lets a screen sit further back, over or beyond the back edge. Check the arm’s clamp suits your desk, following its maker’s instructions.
Should the desk be deeper or wider for a dual setup?
Wider first — two screens sit side by side. Add depth if the screens feel too close.
