How to compress a PDF

1. Choose or drag a PDF file into the tool.
2. Pick a compression level: Low compression / higher quality, Balanced, or High compression / smaller file.
3. Select Compress & download.
4. Review the original size, new size, and percent saved.
5. Download the compressed PDF.

How each compression level works

• Low compression rebuilds the PDF losslessly. Text and visible page content stay selectable where supported, but the size reduction is usually modest.
• Balanced and High compression convert every page into a JPEG image to shrink the file further. This removes text selectability and other interactive PDF features (forms, links, bookmarks, tags), so choose Low compression if you need to keep the PDF text-searchable.
• If a file cannot be reduced by at least 2%, Looty Tools tells you clearly instead of claiming a successful compression.

Limits and important notes

• Maximum file size is 25 MB.
• Maximum page count is 300 pages.
• Balanced and High compression convert pages into images — text is no longer selectable and interactive PDF features are removed.
• Rebuilding a signed PDF can invalidate its digital signature.
• Some PDFs — especially ones that are already optimized — cannot be reduced further; Looty Tools will tell you when that happens instead of claiming success.
• Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are not supported.
• A page that is too large to render safely in the browser will stop compression with a clear error at the Balanced or High level.

Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?

No. Compression runs locally in your browser using pdf-lib and pdf.js. Your file is never uploaded to Looty Tools.

What is the difference between the three compression levels?

Low compression rebuilds the PDF losslessly and keeps text selectable, often with a modest size reduction. Balanced and High compression convert each page into a JPEG image to shrink file size further — Balanced uses a higher-quality image, High uses a smaller, lower-quality one. Both remove text selectability and other interactive PDF features.

Will the compressed PDF still have selectable text?

Only with Low compression. Balanced and High compression flatten every page into an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable in the result.

Why didn't my PDF get any smaller?

Some PDFs — especially ones already optimized or made mostly of text and vectors — cannot be reduced further with Low compression. Looty Tools will tell you clearly when a file was not meaningfully reduced instead of claiming a false success. Try Balanced or High compression, which usually reduce image-heavy or scanned PDFs.

Will a digital signature still be valid after compressing?

Usually not. Rebuilding a PDF — at any compression level — can invalidate an existing digital signature.

What is the maximum file size and page count?

Compress PDF accepts one PDF up to 25 MB. Very large page counts may take longer to process, especially with Balanced or High compression.
