Which Months Have Three Biweekly Paychecks?
If you are paid every two weeks, most months bring two paychecks and a couple of months bring three. Those three-paycheck months are a favorite budgeting trick — bills are usually monthly, so the third check is money a monthly budget never counted on. Which months they are depends on your exact payday, and this guide shows how to find them.

Why some months get three
Two paychecks cover 28 days. Every month except a 28-day February is longer than that, so when a month’s first payday falls early enough — on the 1st to the 3rd of a 31-day month, or the 1st or 2nd of a 30-day month — a third payday fits before the month ends.
26 paydays spread over 12 months leaves two over, so most years have exactly two three-paycheck months. A year with 27 paydays has three.
It depends on which Friday
Two people who are both paid on Fridays can have different three-paycheck months, because there are two alternating Friday schedules. One includes January 1, 2027; the other includes January 8, 2027.
| Year | Fridays including Jan 1, 2027 | Fridays including Jan 8, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | January, July | May, October |
| 2027 | January, July, December | April, October |
| 2028 | June, December | March, September |
Finding yours
- Take any payday and list every payday in the year by adding 14 days at a time.
- Count the paydays that fall in each month.
- The months with three are your extra-check months. They change from year to year, so check each year separately.
Budgeting around the third check
- Build the monthly budget on two paychecks. Rent, loan payments, and subscriptions don’t change in a three-paycheck month.
- Decide in advance what the third check is for — savings, a debt payment, or a buffer for irregular expenses.
- Deductions taken per paycheck, such as some benefit premiums, may also come out three times that month, so check a pay stub before counting on the full amount.
Three-Paycheck Months FAQ
- How many three-paycheck months are in a year?
- Usually two. In a year with 27 biweekly paydays there are three.
- Can February have three biweekly paychecks?
- Only in a leap year, and only when a payday falls on February 1 — the third is then February 29.
- Why are my three-paycheck months different from a coworker’s?
- You may be paid on the opposite week of the same weekday, or on a different weekday; each schedule has its own months.
- Is the third paycheck extra money?
- Not extra pay — the year’s total is the same. Two of the year’s checks simply land in a month that already has two, which only feels extra next to a budget built on two a month.
- Do semi-monthly schedules have three-paycheck months?
- No. Semi-monthly pay is two fixed dates a month, so every month has exactly two paydays.
