Numbers vs. Dates, Phone Numbers, and Version Strings

Why they are not single numbers
A number is a value you could add, compare, or average. A date like 09/27/2026 is three values (month, day, year) joined by slashes; a phone number is a sequence of digit groups; a version number such as 2.0.24 is a list of counters. Treating any of these as one number would produce a meaningless value, so a simple extractor lists their parts instead.

Thousands separators and decimal points
In English-language text, 1,250 and 1,250.50 use commas to group thousands and a point for decimals, so they stay whole. Many other countries write the same amount as 1.250,50 or 1 250,50. An extractor that follows the English convention will split those into separate numbers, so check results from European sources carefully.
When you need the whole value
- For dates, use a date parser or your spreadsheet’s date format instead of a number extractor.
- For phone numbers, keep them as text so leading zeros and the + prefix survive.
- For version numbers and IP addresses, copy them as they are; they are identifiers, not quantities.

- How is a version number like 2.0.24 handled?
- Because it has more than one dot, it cannot be a decimal, so its parts are listed separately: 2, 0, and 24.
- Why was 1.250,50 split up?
- It uses the European style, with a point for thousands and a comma for decimals. English-style extraction reads the comma as a separator between numbers.
- Should phone numbers be stored as numbers?
- No. Store them as text, so leading zeros, spaces, and the + prefix are kept exactly.
