How Many Working Days Are in a Year?
For a Monday-to-Friday job the answer is 260, 261, or 262 working days, depending on the year — before holidays and time off. The number changes because a year isn’t a whole number of weeks. Why it changes
A year is 52 weeks plus one day, or two in a leap year, and each weekday occurs 52 times before those extra days are added. In a common year the extra day is the year’s first weekday: a year starting Monday to Friday has 261 weekdays, and one starting on a Saturday or Sunday has 260.
A leap year adds its first two weekdays: 262 when it starts Monday to Thursday, 261 when it starts on a Friday or Sunday, and 260 when it starts on a Saturday.
From weekdays to days worked
Subtract the holidays that fall on weekdays, then paid vacation and any unpaid leave. In 2026, 10 paid holidays and 15 vacation days take 261 weekdays down to 236 days worked.
